I'm fairly certain it won't, assuming you're talking about the E4OD. If I remember correctly, there were some internal changes as well as changes to the EEC-IV control scheme in '93 or '94. I'm sure Mark K will be along soon with a definite answer.
If both trucks have the rarer C6 (mechanical 3-speed, non-electronic) automatic, then they probably would be a like for like swap. I don't think I've ever seen a powerstroke with a C6 though. However it was still available with any of the gas engines in 1996.
The '96 torque converter has six studs, the '92 had four studs.
If it is a four speed E4OD the solenoid bodies are different, though interchangeable. If you put the later body in the newer trans it will be fine. If it is a C6 (and the C6 was available with the Powerstroke though the 1996 model year) then I think the torque converter is the only difference.
yes the 92 E4OD trans will work in the 96 just fine, BUT you will have to use the newer 6 bolt torque converter for the 96.
we did this exact same swap 9 months ago and the truck runs perfectly.
