98 Explorer GEM? 4WD
Sometimes when I start the vehicle I'll hear a clicking noise behind the dash and the 4WD high and low lights will blink several times. When this happens the windows and wipers also won't work. Then when they feel like it they'll start working. Is this likely a problem with the GEM?

I suggest you start with the battery cables. Remove them from the battery, inspect them for corrosion, clean them, and make sure they are tight when you reinstall them. If you have a second vehicle or a convenient way to take the battery to the local parts store to be tested, this would be a good time to have the battery tested as well. Poor connections and weak batteries can cause all sorts of strange electrical behavior in modern vehicles. If the battery is more than 3 years old you may want to start budgeting for a new battery as well.

I decided to take out the GEM and open it up to look for cold solder joints or bad connections. Everything looked good so I put it back together. Been driving it a week now and the problem hasn't returned.
