man oh man do I feel stupid asking this. My 94 F250, 460, E4OD. Is it possible to put the flex plate in backwards? And if so, how could you tell?
Starts, runs,, drives...but,, have a intermittent rattle and slight grinding/whirring noise i haven't isolated yet.
Will crawl under it tomorrow after the rain stops and take a peek at it. But, am curious.
Confirmed flexplate is installed correctly with weight and lip ring facing the motor. Issue is a rattling sound on acceleration, and a whirring noise that comes and goes. Does not do it in park at idle. Tried power braking and does it a little bit, then seems to go away over 1500 or so rpms. Transmission was supported during removal and install. Torque converter never shifted, and motor to transmission skid together smoothly.
I am at a loss here. Truck runs fine even when making noise, and no problems on gauges. Help. Help.
Thanks
2wd or 4wd? If 4wd make sure the case is fully in 2hi. I did some trans work and some how managed to not get the stick back to the 2 hi spot all the way and had a whirring noise. Probably the case guts grinding themselves to death. But after a shift to 4hi and back to 2 hi it went away.

Good idea. I did try that as well. Ran shifter thru4 hi, neutral, and low, back to 2 hi. Same. Even shifted into 4 hi while it was doing it and no change.
Thanks
What about checking the catalytic converters, they make some weird noises when the ceramic breaks up. Also check the belt tensioner that it is in the middle of it’s travel and not making metal to metal contact. That happened to me and drove me crazy before some mentioned it to me.
Cat is new. Timing at 10°. I am almost starting to wonder if the cam is hitting the back freeze plug. Sounds weird but I originally put the plug in to deep, had to punch it back out a little bit. And wondering if back of cam is rubbing and hitting on it?
Block bored .030. New pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, seals, timing set, harmonic balancer, water pump, sending units, cam. Pretty much everything. Took my time to do it right.....I thought. Lol. Also deleted the air pump, and all plumbing to that. Banks exhaust into their stinger package, with a magna flow catalytic converter. Kept the EGR system. Truck runs great! Just got to figure out this rattle.

if something was hitting the cam, I would think it would be constant, idle, free rev, accelerating since nothing makes the cam do anything other than spin.
Does it do it from a dead stop? And how hard do you have to accelerate for it to make the noise? Full throttle, part throttle?

yes from a stop. And while cruising if i accelerate. Hard or easy acceleration it still does it. If I ease off, it goes away. And the whirring/rubbing noise is really confusing me. Sounds like 2 different problems, but, I feel they are related. It did not due this prior to rebuild, so think it is engine related.

And I agree with your theory. My only thought was clearance between cam and plug. And as loads are put on the drive trains and parts shift around. The rattle WITH the whirring/rubbing is what is throwing me off. If it was just a rattle, constantly, that would be easier to diagnose.
Do you happen to know what pistons were used like brand and part number? Was the block resurfaced at all? Some cheap aftermarket over bore pistons have the crown height shortened with the theory that the lower compression will offset the overbore. But this opens the quench gap and can lead to detonation.
