I was going to install a zf behind a newly rebuilt 300/4.9 and was shopping for a clutch on Summit. I found a good quality Ram kit. Summit states it fits a 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8. Great. I bought it. Sat on my garage floor for ... two years before installation. Now the clutch growls and rattles loud enough to scare the neighbors when I lug it a bit. Okay, the trans is old, I think. I pull it, pay $1000 to have it rebuilt. It still growls, etc. I ck everything. Still growls. I go back to Summit site. Although it states it fits a 4.9, when I click on 'application', nowhere does it list a 4.9. Ha, they also show that ford put a zf5 behind a 302/5.0, in F250's which ford never did. Should I have checked in application? Heck yes. Should it have said 4.9 compatible? Heck no!
My little mistake cost me $1200. And Summit said: "oh, we're sorry. We'll fix that." #$*^ me. That makes me feel better. They're going to fix it.
I also noticed that summit shows that ford installed a 302 with a zf5 on several F250s. I don't believe that engine/trans combo was ever an option, was it?
That is the correct clutch kit for your application. Does the clutch slip? These clutch hubs can make noise and the ZF-5 can exhibit gear roll over noise when lugged.

When I enter L6 into the engine type box on the summit page link, it says in big red letters: This does not fit ....
It doesn't slip. It growls in neutral. The second issue is the horribly loud noise it makes. I wouldn't call it lugging. If I don't drive aggresively, and wind the gears, it will make a noise like a machine gun that is VERY loud. And that is not roll over, I don't think. Can it be that loud?
What can I do to determine what the cause is?
Sorry for your troubles. I will try to answer that one question in post #6. Now don't quote me or make a money bet on this, but I am pretty sure YES Ford DID put a 5.0/302 in a newer 9th gen (92-97) F250's and even 4wd one's. I am still researching if there was a 5 spd option behind it or just an auto trans. I am finding conflicting info/answers on that motor deal, but I do for sure remember my brother in law had one. And I was like that's an F250, what's it doing with a 302?
"F-250 : 1992–1995 3/4 ton (8,800 lb GVWR max) , The F-150 could be had with one of 3 gas engines, the 4.9L (300 cid) I6, the 5.0L (302 cid) V8, and the 5.8L (351 cid) V8. The same gas engine options were also available for the heavy duty trucks along with the 7.5L (460 cid), or you could opt for the 7.3L (444 cid) diesel."
"As before, the 5.0L V8 was not offered above 8500 GVWR and the F-Superduty was 7.5 and diesel only. "
Same. I like to cross reference numbers between a few vendors to make sure it's what I need, and also check the pricing!
So, as the guide on Summit site shows, I'm fairly certain this is the wrong clutch. If it is, it would be making all kinds of noise, right?
I too am very fond of Summit. I deal with them all the time, and 99% of the purchases are trouble free. This foul up was my fault, my failure to confirm the clutch to be correct for my application. "Assumption is the mother of all f... ups," as they say in Under Siege 2.
One thing I have learned through the years is many of the "programs" or whatever that list parts by year/make/model have lots and lots of issues. I had a crossover year z71 Tahoe that I was told multiple times didn't exist at parts houses. Got home with parts, disassembled, only to have to get a ride or take another car to swap out wrong parts, more that I ever wanted to. Very frustrating. Hate you're having trouble. These trucks are always full of surprises.
