FLOORING ADVICE

FTE...I'm selling the old family homestead to my niece...it's been in the family for 65 years and...hopefully...it will make it to 100 years in the family. In preparation for her to move in with her family...I'm doing some upgrading. That is to include new flooring in the LR/DR/DEN. I've had one flooring contractor provide a quote...$5616 for 20 sq. yds. of a vinyl plank flooring. That includes scraping up the old glued down carpeting...removing it...and...installing new flooring. Some of the carpeting is over hardwood...most over plywood and he's figuring about $1000 to replace the plywood. Obviously if he doesn't have to...we'll save some money.

I know it's expensive...but...we don't have the ability to do it ourselves. My real question is...does anyone have any experience with vinyl plank versus a laminate like Pergo Outlast??? The quote from the flooring contractor is for $129/sq. yd. for his vinyl plank. I know I can get the same thing at HOME DESPOT for about $35/sq. yd. The Pergo would be about $25/sq.yd. HD is going to measure the flooring and check out what they have to do...gotta keep the local guy honest.

Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

With vinyl plank its hit and miss, the thickness of the product is what counts. I do find commercial A5 rated LVL to be a superior product and a min 5mm is what I use. I do think the price is fair especially if glue down carpet is involved. I personally wouldn't consider Pergo for flooring. It has a market and is geared towards DIY. I highly suggest looking at the Swiss Krono LVL and Laminate flooring. These are fairly priced and extremely long lasting commercial flooring components.

Thanks...I'll check that out. The one they're trying to sell her is Beauflor Essence #976M. It lists a wear layer of 22 mils.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Pergo Outlast...from others on FTE and also from a former customer of mine who has many upper level apartments...he uses Outlast throughout all of them. Why wouldn't you recommend it???
