So this is the old and the new water pump. In my previous post, I talked about having an over heating problem and water in the oil. We got that fixed and the excursion drove great for about 2 weeks pulling about 7k lbs 4 or 5 times, never getting hot no water in the oil. So out of nobwhere the ex ran hot again so i started checking everything again and all turns out great. Well I decided maybe try the water pump. I pulled it and this is what it looks like. I dont know if its original but shouldn't the top on have the same metal ring as the bottom one?
I would agree on the updated design. If you look at the old pump the impeller blades don't have the extra bend that would give a place for the outer ring to have been spot welded. And based on how larger higher volume pumps are designed that added outer ring should make for a better pump as it would hold onto the water better as its flung out against the volute of the pump housing. Given a choice between the two I'd go with the design of the new pump every time.
