Seller is asking 500.00 . Supposedly low mileage rebuilt good runner. Working on a 63 4WD F100. Needs engine. Would this be underpowered for light duty work? Or, keep looking? Tom
302s do fine in light duty work. A 351 does better.
FWIW based on posts here and what I know about the SBF, I would go with a late model roller motor. Good heads, roller cam. Pop in the right distributor, add manifold and carb and away you go.
Someone elses rebuild of a 50 year old motor....
A quick search for "explorer 302 engine for sale" shows that $500 is almost enough to land one of those.
Thanks for the response. I passed on this. Although clean, and sitting on the floor, I would still tear it down and inspect not knowing or hearing it run. Always a risk - not knowing what level of rebuild was completed and by who. May end up getting a rebuilt short block for starters ... and thinking about the 351 as you suggested. Thank you. Tom
Even a rebuilt short block, I'd go over it before using one. Check the bolt torque values. Last one I bought (roller 302, .040 overbore) they torqued the rod bolts to 50 ft lbs, which is double the value for the stock bolts. And the reman builders never change the stock bolts in the reconditioning of the rods (if they even do that) That motor wouldn't have lasted long at all before chucking a rod.
