little cooling system maint

2000 7.3 about to get a little cooling system love. No current problems but it is 20 yrs old and the coolant does need replacing. The question is, since I'm replacing water pump, thermostat, radiator and heater hoses, degas hoses and bottle and adding a coolant filter setup, should I do the flush (Gooch's method) first then install the new stuff before adding the final coolant/distilled water or replace the stuff first and then do the flush? I've talked myself into questioning which one makes the most sense. While I'm in the area I'm going to replace the idler pulley, tensioner and belt as well as the CPS. Would it be worth the extra effort to remove the intercooler to clean it and the radiator? Lord, thank you for RiffRaff and the one stop shop!

How about take everything off and then flush by holding the hose to the open ports? Pulling the plugs of course! This way you remove restrictions and don't push the old fluid through your brand new parts. Put new stuff on and do the final distilled water flushes.

I flushed my radiator while it was out of the truck by filling and draining in both directions, couple of times from the top then a couple from the bottom. It took probably 45 minutes or more to get just clear water coming out.

Since your going to have all the other components off now would be a good time to reseal your oil cooler if you've never done it. A lot easier to get to the front cooler mount bolts with cooling components off the front of the motor.

I prefer to flush with the old parts and fill with fresh coolant after installing new parts.
