Need help deciding if I should have the dealer fix or leave it. I've looked everywhere to find the answer on how they align a Super Duty door only to find nothing on Bing, Google, this site, etc... Most I've found are on late models and not the aluminum body. My fear is the dealer will make matters worse since it doesn't look like it's just loosen some bolts and adjust. The gap between the front and rear door is about 1/2 inch and there is basically no gap on the other side. My questions are:
1. Does anyone know of a site I can look this information up to make a decision?
2. Did anyone have their door aligned?
3. Does anyone have knowledge on how difficult this alignment will be?
The truck goes in on Wednesday for the dealer to fix but would like input from the experts!!
Here are a few pictures of the door...
If you enjoy fiddling with things, loosen the bolts a bit on the hinges and see if you can align it better. Looks like the hinge on the body is fixed with rivets, so maybe the bolt on the pin of the hinge is cam shaped or slotted to allow adjustment forward and backward. Otherwise, if you don't mind a visit to the dealer, let them fool with it under warranty. I ended up adjusting the doors on my new Expedition that had a similar issue.
Yeah that would bother me, mine is off some as well but not that bad. Not sure I would trust the dealer to get it right though...tuff call. Is it something you feel comfortable messing with?
Thanks for your inputs. I do feel comfortable right up until I screw things up. 😊 Since it's under warranty, I didn't want them to blame me for making it worse and not covering it. For them to say they need it all day really got me thinking about the whole process. Maybe it's a schedule thing and will get to it when they can. But it does make me feel better that the Expedition was able to get fixed at home.
On the 2020 Explorer I bought last year I had the dealer adjust one of the doors and the hood. The hood was only off by a very small fraction but it was something I could see from the driver's seat so I wasn't going to live with it. They made it perfect.

Thanks! I'm assuming the explorer and the super duty use the same type of hinge mechanism. Did they mess up the hinge paint or scratch it at all? The top of the passenger rear door seems to have the correct spacing so they would only need to move the bottom part over about 1/4 inch. I appreciate your experience with your Explorer and hope it's an easy fix as well.
I don't know that the mechanisms are the same, I just offered it as an example that SOMETIMES the dealer does things right. No scratches in the paint either. Cheers!
