PiMPxshift Install and Review
PiMPxshift Install and Review
I was hoping to do a step-by-step install of the PiMPxhift aftermarket ECU by Stinger Performance but life got in the way. Instead, I'll do a quick run-down of my experience and a review of my initial thoughts.
I bit the bullet and purchased the PiMPxhift this past May. I had a few issues after installing it that greatly slowed my progress. These issues were user error and were easily corrected with the exception that I broke the ECU connector due to my own negligence. The customer support I received from the crew was top notch and very professional. I ended up having to send my computer back to Stinger for repair. The turnaround was quick and they charged me a more than fair price for the work they had to do to fix my mistake.
I have it installed and finally running now and I must say this thing has made a world of difference how it runs and drives. The throttle response is much sharper than before (as a reminder I was running a swapped 351w with the factory 302 MAF system) and I have gained a very noticeable amount of performance. I still have some kinks to work out with the tune and a lot to learn so I imagine it will get even better. Another huge difference is how well the transmission shifts. It no longer is a dog in 4th gear; it gives the sensation of being in 3rd when it's actually in 4th, all shifts are firmer and with more "demand." And I haven't even touched any of the transmission settings from the default settings. It's like driving an entirely different truck.
Another thing that is great about this is I plan to use the same computer next year when I swap in a 460 and E4OD transmission. Just a few clicks with the mouse inputting the new changes such as displacement, larger fuel injectors, camshaft specs, different tranny, etc and the ECU will actually self learn the new changes.
If anyone is on the fence about getting one just get it. You won't regret it.

Where does my knowledge rank in tuning? Novice, Beginner, Green lol.
I can’t speak from personal experience but if its anything like mine it will help immensely with a stock batch fire set up. I think most of the guys that use their products use the PiMPx ECU, which is for batch fire and have great results on their Mustangs and trucks. The PiMPxs is for sequential, and PiMPxshift for automatic transmission can be used for batch or sequential.

The truck originally was a 302/4R70W with factory MAF. I swapped a 351w in a few years ago but retained all the factory wiring/MAF, and 302 computer. The 302 ECU ran this setup just fine for the past 50k miles and had to be used as Ford did not have a 351/4R70W/MAF combo and ECU. So all I did now was swap in the Stinger ECU and it runs and shifts so much better.
Yes. I had a rebuilt 351w with GT40P heads, long tube headers, stock camshaft but with 1.72 rockers, and the Edelbrock truck intake while using the stock 302 computer and it compensated well. I was probably at the threshold of the stock fuel system as it would ping under heavy load on hot summer days. If you have a MAF truck with those mods you should be ok, probably too much with a factory SD truck though.

Hmm... I was going to reuse my GT40 heads off the 5.0L and go with a slightly more aggressive cam than stock. Being slightly lean is a potential problem. Maybe the A9L is not going to work if that is the case. I have a M5OD now but a ZF5 is waiting to be swapped in its place.
You’d probably be ok with that setup and the A9L ECU or a stock 351w ECU for a manual tranny. Just be careful the compression ratio isn’t too high when you rebuild the 351 maybe. Also, you just might need a higher flowing fuel pump and/or adjustable fuel pressure regulator if it does get lean. But that’s the nice thing about the aftermarket ECU, you can customize the tune very easily to suit your truck.
I've been considering a PimpX for a while as it seems like the easiest plug and play solution for fully tuneable multiport EFI on these EEC-IV Fords.
Is your PimpX set up as a MAF or MAP system? I know they're advertised to be capable of either, but people seem to run megasquirt as a MAP system for the most part.
How much tuning did you have to do? Things like dialing in fuel are easy, but what about transient fueling which is highly dependent on the intake manifold design? Is that all pretty self-learning too?
And then what about idle air valve control? I read lots of bad stories about getting megasquirt to play nice with the PWM ford valves. Does Stinger have that nailed down pretty good in his software?

Been following this for years, the Pimpxshift came out 2019, but these guys are way over my knowledge, of ever attempting, and then it gets deep it'd be nice, price came in higher than initial thoughts.
