after talking to a couple of dealerships, i'm thinking that i may be asking for too much of a discount on 2003 trucks.
i was trying to get a 2003 ranger edge supercab with a 4.0 and manual tranny for maybe 1000 to 2000 dollars less than invoice. am i crazy? they were trying to charge me $21,650 before a $3000 factory rebate. that included a $600 dealer installed bedliner and a $400 aftermarket grill guard (neither of which i wanted).
i didnt even bother to deal with the salesman since he knew NOTHING about rangers. i had to tell him almost everything about the truck.
then i went to a dodge dealer to try to get a 2003 dakota club cab 2WD with a 4.7 V8. they were trying to sell it to me at msrp. i would have gotten the $4500 rebate dodge is offering, but i just think that the dealers should be willing to discount a truck that MSRPs for $27,500. after all, it's the end of the year. there's still quite a few dealerships in the area that i can visit for the dodge, but am i wasting my time? should i just take the $4500 rebate and be happy? i mean, i'll be paying over $2K in taxes if i dont get the dealership to knock off a couple thousand from the MSRP.
Go to CarsDirect.com and build the truck you want. They'll then tell you the lowest price you can expect to pay for that truck in your area. Use it to bargain with your local dealers; if they aren't interested, then go back to CarsDirect and ask them to find the truck for you at that price. Try it- it really works.
The rebate costs the dealership NOTHING. They should bargain off the msrp on top of the rebate. I wouldn't pay more than $500 over invoice, and then throw the rebate on top of that.
Don't give it a second thought. Drive a hard bargain.
No mercy. They won't do it for free. You wouldn't believe the ******* I'm being in my shopping. Don't bother with sales staff unless you like them. They don't know squat and I wouldn't want them to get a dime. If I knew as little as them in my business I'd be canned.
Good Luck @ the dentist.... root canal isn't that bad anymore, but I'm VERY tolerant of pain.
I 've been dealing with carsdirect.com looking for an '03 Explorer, but alas, I'm afraid I'm too late in the new model year to find what I really want.
I'm thinking of waiting til after 12/01/03 & see what the new rebates are like - if there are any. Just call me the procrastinator.
I hate to spend the money!!

If you're looking for an '03 Eddie Bauer or a Limited, they're pretty well gone. But there's still a decent selection of '03 XLS/ XLT if you're a little bit flexible.
