Question Valvoline MaxLife Engine Protector

Anybody know what this stuff contains, does, etc? It seems to be thick like STP.

Is it an additive? I wouldn't mess with it. I've had great luck with Valvoline MaxLife oil, though - 3,000 miles and my oil pan gasket quit leaking and a I don't appear to be burning any oil.

You'll see in other threads that I'm a huge fan of Valvoline. I've
noticed that my cars always run smoother on Valvoline compared to any other oil.

EDIT: MaxLife contains all sorts of special ingredients to "condition seals" etc. etc. Basically, it just swells them up so they don't leak anymore. I would guess that the Maxlife engine protectant is just a huge "vitamin" of seal swellers & such for your engine. You'd get the same results by switching to regular Maxlife oil and changing it on schedule.

Thanks Big Matt XXL. I used to buy various brands like Quaker State, Pennzoil, and (remember) Wolf's Head. But for the past 2 to 3 years have been using Valvoline Durablend. Just recently switched to MaxLife though. Jim Fitch and the oil analysis site (www.noria.com) recommends the so-called "high mileage" oils or synthetic. High Mileage oil is what we should be using in all our cars, new or old. It is not so much seal sweller as seal conditioner to prevent it from drying out and cracking, though there may be a swell component. You can use the "Energy Conserving" oils with the starburst certification on the front if you are a greenie and don't care about your engine, but those oils only get that cert if they beat the fuel mileage of a 5w30 synthetic. How's a dino oil to do it--compromise through temporary viscosity collapse through the bearings! That's why you never see these ratings on a 10w40 or 20w50. There's no way those can beat a 5w30 synthetic.

I shook the bottle in the store and it seems about as thick as STP--motor honey they used to call it. The MDS shows a 100C cst viscosity of about 102! Compare a 10w40 is about 14. This stuff would turn your 10w30 into 10w50. I think this is not a good idea. It always bugs me when a company you trust and seemingly has good products (Maxlife oil) puts out a snake oil type product, but maybe it has a valid use to quench the blue smoke on a ratty old beater.

It stopped my leaking/burning of oil. Snake oil or not, it delivered as promised.

Interesting, but they get a much different 100C viscosity of around 15, whereas the MDS said about 102. The thickness of it seems to support the 102. Maybe worth getting a bottle and adding maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a bottle per oil change, but I would hope the MaxLife oil already is fortified and that Eng Protector is mainly for loose engines that need a really heavy weight.

BTW, do you know if there is a good Rislone Engine Treatment discussion on the site you referenced?

ADDITION: I just called Valvoline and they told me it will not affect the base oil viscosity, that it is basically a viscosity improver. I am going to get a bottle (Wall Mart is the cheapest I have seen this or Max Life oil) and put maybe 1/3 in to see if it boosts my oil pressure (a one time thing easier than changing the oil to a higher viscosity when it only has 500 miles on it).
