Hey fellas, I bought a 78 custom and was wondering about cowl and fender alignment, it seems the cowl hangs over the fenders on the ends yet doors are lightened up well is that normal? Thanks Robert in Tn.
Ever seen a cat chase its tail, same as chasing matching cowl, fender, hood and door gaps. Toss in a cab to bed "dent" line...Remember cowl is set and fixed. So it all is a tail chase to get them where you can live with them. Fenders can push out a bit (for cowl drop to fender edge alignment), but then the doors have to follow the fender, front edge of door. But at least the rear edge has to match the cab. And then toss the "dent" line into the mix. IMO the cowl to fender L&R gap (which I think should be set 1st anyway) and can only can be adjusted by raising or lowering the front of the fender/via the radiator support. Round and round she goes.
I just put my front clip together and my cowl hangs over my fenders. Door and fender match up perfectly
I'd think you could loosen the bolts in the door jambs and the bolts at the rocker panels, and be able to pull the fenders out to where they line up with the cowl. You might also have to loosen some of the bolts along the top of the fender, but it should work.
