As in what kind of safety problem? I can't see that.

Maybe somebody using the headrest to assist their entry into the vehicle instead of the parts designed for the job lost footing when it flipped forward an broke an appendage or worse falling to the pavement.

Maybe it was legislated away. You just never know what kind of warning requirements or propositions may have doomed them from far West of us.

I checked my 2018 Lariat the other day and they have the button that lets them flop forward. The first time I flopped one forward, on this pickup. I almost never use the center mirror, too many years driving trucks (real trucks) Vans, Pickup with toppers or campers or the dang thing just came loose from the windshield which I promptly tossed under the seat. also backing up I have the nice big screen for the backup camera, outside mirrors along with backup and cross traffic sensors on my '18 Lariat.

I suspect that Ford is saving the money with using standard headrests because almost nobody uses the folding feature. I have the buttons and may have folded them once since it was new.
I had a button on the dash of my previous SUV that did the same thing for the 3rd row seats. That was useful. These...not so much.
Maybe they did a survey and found it was an unneeded feature.
It's just a guess based on my use, maybe somebody finds it very helpful to be able to fold them.

I hardly use the button myself. Barely ever have anyone riding in the back seat of my SuperCab, so leave them down almost all the time. Not because I don't know how to use mirrors. Oh, and my truck is one of the models for real drivers, there ain't no cameras assisting the driving.

Beginning in 2018, all new vehicles were required to have backup cameras....
Your next truck will have one, even if it’s an XL without a single option or upgrade.

Cool ... 2018, that was about when they stopped asking me to remove my dash cam coming on the site at work .... since all new cars had at least one camera from factory, I guess. But my next truck will probably be a 2030 model, I would expect electronic chauffeur on my flying truck by then!

We have a winner. Pulling too many of those out of corporate pockets puts all of us at risk.

Just me thinking outside of the box, I once had a one-time passenger I was helping get home in the back seat with the headrest folded down and I didn't realize until after the short trip, they didn't want to say anything about being uncomfortable having to lean their head forward because the folded down headrest jutted forward into the back of their neck/head. They didn't want to ask me how to raise it back up with the lever because they were just happy to get a ride home. From a safety perspective, I can only image the injury that would have happened during a collision with the back of their neck/head springing backwards and slamming into the pointed tip of folded down headrest. The area of injury would be exactly into one of their cervical vertebrae with a concentrated pressure point of impact.

+1 That's one of my favorite features. That and the cavernous back seat area that is larger than the box on some compact trucks. I do use the side mirrors as well, but when the rear view mirror is available, I use it too. Can never have too much visibility as far as I'm concerned.
