Question Basic '79 F-250 Q's

1. My '79 F-250 has a '74 460 in it, what was the horsepower rating and LB-FT of torque for this engine?

2. Sometimes when I brake real hard or take a quick sharp turn my oil light comes on, then it goes out when the G Forces return to normal. Is my oil just low, what's going on here?

3. When I start my truck up in the morning (~68 Degrees outside), I have noticed stiffness in my power steering. Later in the day when I leave to go home it isn't noticable. Is my power steering unit getting ready to take a dive?

4. Is it possible to replace a door hinge spring without removing the door?

Steve

P.S. My Ford truck is strong and powerful, it is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. The 460 pushes 6500 lbs of truck around with amazing performance. They just don't make stuff like this anymore.

For the engine i would think high 300hp make sure you are using the correct oil becuz the wrong one will do things like that. Call Royal Pur ple and they will tell you.

I don't know about the HP rating on a '74 460, and 30 years later what its factory specs are hardly comparable. By now its probably had valve jobs, and the carb rebuilt or replaced and possibly a complete overhaul at some point. All these factors (including wear) will have greatly changed its real HP and torque ratings.

If your making EXTREME hard corners your oil pump sump is sucking air for a few seconds as all the oil washes to one side of the oil pan. You can get a perfomance oil pan that has baffles, or slow down a little.

Your power steering system might need to be flushed or at least drained and refilled with a quality PS fluid. Good chance some yoyo saw that it was low dumped 30W oil in it. When cool, the oil thickens and results in the stiff handling. This is also hard on the pump so you might want to take care of it ASAP.

1)The '72 460 was 212hp/4400rpm's and 342 lbs ft torque at 2800rpm's. The '74 was 202hp so I would say the torque was about 328 lbs ft or so.

2) Could be oil level, it could be a bent pick up tube or, if you have a rear sump pan the oil could be flowing up the "ramp" of the sump into the front of the motor.

3) Most likly it is the oil or the belt, I would flush the system. I do it every few years and I have never replaced a pump.

4) Anything is possible. I can't answer that one, I've never needed to replace one.

Ha ha, my question sounds like I just bought the thing, sorry. Actually I have owned the truck for a couple of years now and the questions I remembered to 'ask' while I was on the computer late last night (and too lazy to check the oil in the dark).

The ol man I bought the truck from DID rebuild the motor and I DID have the carb rebuilt when I bought the truck. Also not to mention he rattled off a bunch of hop-up aftermarket items he included in the rebuild, what, I don't remember now. I'm just assuming it's probably sliiiightly stronger than what it was originally off the assembly line. I asked the question because I didn't have any real idea what the original HP Rating would even roughly ball park at.

I had replaced all the door hinges well over a year ago with some nice units from the salvage yard. The driver side spring broke just a few weeks ago. Damn it! I have another one but haven't had the time to look into putting it on. I would buy a brand new one but Denni$ Carpenter part$ are outta $ight!

What is Royal Purple?

Thanks for all the answers!

The 'ol man I bought it from said so (yeah yeah yeah, I know...) Theres an orange sticker on there too that dates 1974. I know this, it sure surprises a lot of those stupid tuner idiots, I swear I wish I had this motor in an A bone! Even an old Maveric would be intense.

I remember now another important Q I had thats been buggin me. The Sun Visor. The 90 degree angled rod (or whatever the actual degree is) that connects the visor to the roof. When the sun is pokin me in the eye at the end of the day, I put the visor down. But when I put it back up it doesn't really want to stay up (especially when I'm doin 45 or more with the windows down and the wind is stirring around in the cab. Unlike other visors I have seen there is no set screw or tightening adjustment designed into the visor itself to keep it from doing this. It is just upholstered around the rod and I speculate there was some kinda 'sticky gunk' or something put in there from the factory to provide enough 'friction' so it would stay in any position but after all these years is failing. Is there a relatively simple remedy for this? Possibly a replacement 'friction gunk' product or something or a 'home remedy'? I sure wish it had the cool tightening adjustments that my '65 Buick did.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That engine may have been designed for a 74 but cast in 1977,1978 etc,possibly making it a later engine.
You have to get ALL the casting numbers from the heads & Block to tell for sure.
