Transfer case differences

Transfer case differences

I have a '19 XLT 4x4. What is the difference between this transfer case and the transfer case in the Lariat trim level and above? I know mine is a shift on the fly and the more expensive models have the '4A' setting, and I know the operational difference. But is the mechanical difference more that just the switch? can a '4M' be converted to a '4A'?

Yes, and no! The transfer cases are different mechanically and cannot be converted. You'd have to do a swap to get a transfer case with the 4A setting.

The transfer case with 4A has what is essentially a clutch in it that allows for different wheel speeds without breaking stuff. Clutch may not be the right term, but at least conveys the idea. So yes, they are mechanically different.

There may also be electronic differences depending on how they chose to control the torque split.

I think it has an electrically actuated clutch. Is that right? I'm not sure.

The transfercase is a BW TOD unit. Yes you can convert your truck to AWD all you need is the switch, transfercase and programming.
