Radiator core replacement

I bought a repro "65" radiator core support and spent hours modifying it to be functionally a '66 core support, but the basic stamping is that of a '61-64, not a '65/66. It just doesn't look right to me. So, when I was at the F100 nationals in Pigeon Forge, I picked up a very decent used '66 core. It has a fair amount of surface rust but no rot anywhere. I built a special box for it and poured in 10 gallons of Evapo-Rust. That wasn't enough so I ordered another 5 gallon bucket. That will get every nook and cranny clean and ready for paint. I will have to flip it over to de-rust the other half.

Larry, I’d think that you could have had that blasted and powder coated for about 150? I don’t imagine all the chemical was cheap.

Blasting won't get in all the crooks and crannies deep inside, and they usually rust from the inside out when dirt gets inside and then it gets wet and there is no air circulation or way for it to drain. Powder coating is still an option but it will depend on the price. There are only a couple of local places that do it down here and they stay backed up. 15 gallons of Evapo-Rust certainly wasn't cheap, but I will be able to use it for other parts that need rust removal. Last year I came across an NOS '66 core support and passed because I thought the price was too high. I wish I would have bought it now.

I got ya. Though I am in Cali, and the chemicals allowed here now aren’t what they used to be, I have taken parts to a local radiator shop to boil them out, they came out rust free. Now even radiator shops are hard to find here.
