I just bought a beat to death 87 250 4x4 SC 4-speed diesel. About a third of the time, if I let off on the accelerator in any gear, or downshift, there is a bit of a jolt and some mechanical noise, sometimes more than once. Definately not a universal, and definately in the drivetrain somewhere. Anyone have experience with this? I suspect the TC, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

4-spd?, Torque converter?, in an '87 diesel? What trans does that beast have? Is it an automatic? If it is, you do not have a 4 spd auto in a diesel, You have 1 of five trans. you have either a 4-spd granny low MANUAL trans (NP435, BW t-18), a 3spd w/ OD MANUAL trans ( BW T-19, also called a 4-spd), A ZF industries 5-spd MANUAL ( granny low, 3 spd w/ OD), OR a C6 automatic ( 3-sp).
If you truely have a 4-spd auto, then the trans has been replaced with something other than the original.
Anyone have one of these things apart recently? I have rebuilt several 4 speeds, but never a transfer case. Any advice? I am leaning more toward a transfer case problem since it happens in all gears. My trans is the standard t-18 4spd.
