For the cost of a swap, I think you'd be money ahead putting four grand into the E4OD and getting a very stout transmission. If you have to have a six speed auto you could probably look into the 6L80E or 6L90E also. With the popularity of the LS platform, the previous 4L80E, and stand alone controllers being available, it might be a viable option.
thankyou for the good info,i ask this question because i did a short maintenance pull with my trailer on a short but very steep grade ,i thought that the weakness in my truck is not the 460 but the gear spacing in the e4od.iwent from 2500 in third gear to 3700 rpm when it downshifted into second, thats a hugh jump.so my reasoning is that a 6sd auto would minimize that somewhat while still keeping the engine in its powerband. fitting a later model auto isnt easy taking into account the controller, that is the reason for my question has anybody done this?
The 6R80 in my 2006 Lincoln Navigator drops out of 6th straight to 4th gear whenever there is a slight incline and I am pulling my 14 foot cargo trailer. If the incline is more pronounced it drops to 3rd. It's a huge jump in RPM. A 6R80 behind a 7.5L engine may not drop down as many gears under the same conditions since my 5.4L 3-valve V8 makes power at the higher end.
It's a lot of money to swap in later model transmission. I would go the other way and put money into the engine. A set of Boport heads, headers and free flowing exhaust would be my first choice.
I don't think Gear Vendor works on an E4OD. E4OD is 3 gears with over drive. C6 is only 3 gears.
So, 1200 rpm difference down shifting up hill from third to second, makes me ask the following:
- what speed?
- what rear end gear ratio?
- what tire size?
For where I live and drive, you must have tall tires, and a gears less than 3.55? guessing...
or is it the other way around, small tires, and 4.10s??
And gearvendors state "Double Overdrive not to be used when towing or loaded.
If you tow or are loaded all the time, gear vendors wont' do anything for final gear on hwy, as Ford 4th OD is the final gear.
.07 ratio difference from gear venders 3rd over to ford 4th OD.
