Fuel Tank

I getting closer to needing to address the fuel tank in my 1956 F100. It is still the original tank. Externally in great condition. But, smells of varnish badly when I open the gas cap. Before investing in a new tank are there any tricks to cleaning fuel tanks? There are no radiator shops in my area so that is not an option to get it cleaned.

I would go ahead and invest in an new tank especially if there is any rust at all in the tank. It will be money well spent. Would be nothing worse than getting truck up and running and having filter/rust issues causing you to break down or having driveability issues. I purchased a poly tank from mid fifty when built my truck over 15 years ago. No issues with rust in fuel.

In my build topic I just did a post how I restored my fuel tank. I'm very happy with the result and it didn't cost much, actualy it was very cheap.

Yeah, I know a new tank is the best option. I hate giving up original part on something this old. I guess I can hang the old tank on one of the garage walls. Still wished it had the original 272 motor and automatic trans it came with.

I thought if I could clean the fuel tank, I'd then use a large 100 micron filter before the fuel pump and the standard 40 micron filter between the pump and carb. There are many billet aluminum 100 micron filters that are made to be disassembled and cleaned.

A 100µ filter will only keep the rocks and twigs out of the fuel system. A 40µ filter will trap the sand. Both will pass any water. Knowing this, I installed a compact Racor 110A filter with a 2µ R11S element before the fuel pump. Nothing gets through it (including water) that won't burn or clog the fuel system. A bit spendy but worth it imho.

I've used electrolysis to clean fuel tanks, works really well and is a safe process. Just get some PH Plus powder from the pool section, a trickle charger (or just a little wall power brick that's DC and 1A or greater) and a sacrificial anode and you're set.

Take the tank to the quarter wash and use the engine degreaser and pressure wash the tank. Once you put fuel in it,, it will never rust again. It’s when they don’t get used and long periods of stale gas and condensation cause the issues. I pressure washed my tank in 99 and have never done anything to it since

Thanks for the info. I have a trickle charger so I am going to look into the electrolysis method.

Good idea. I'll start with this then if I have to, proceed with the electrolysis. Unless, it looks beyond repair after cleaning.
