Well, my son went ahead and got it - a 87 F150 flareside with a 302 and C6. Currently it starts and idles but when you put it in gear it dies. He replaced the fuel filter - and that helped smooth out the engine. His uncle (my BIL) says it might be the ignition in the column getting moved when the shift selector is moved. So we are looking at that next. Anyone else been down this road?
If you give it a little gas, can you keep it running when it goes into gear, or does it die like the ignition was turned off? Maybe jack up the rear end so going into gear isn't actually loading the engine (much), and if that still kills it, your BIL may be correct. If giving it a little gas keeps it going, I'd check the idle control.
