Transfer case compatible?

I have a 1991 Ford F150 4×4 will a 1994 transfer case fit? Help. Both had auto trans.

If it's from a 1/2 ton truck it's the same t-case.

Your '91 has a mechanical speedometer driven by a gear on the tailhousing of the transfer case. The 94 has an electronic speedometer driven by a VSS on the rear differential. The '94 transfer case may or may not (probably not) have the provision for the mech speedo drive on its tailhousing. It's not hard to swap the tailhousings, however.

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but you have to swap more than the tailhousing. The output shaft on the 91 also has a dimple in it for a detent ball that retains the speedo gear on the shaft. I've never seen a 92-96/7 transfercase with this provision. So you'd either have to swap the shaft or create a way to retain the gear.

​​​​​​You're probably right. I've only ever been inside the older ones. I didn't consider that the dimple might not be there on the newer ones.
