I think I'd focus more on finding a reputable shop experienced with FE motors. But, since you asked, I recently had my 390 rebuilt. Complete, assembled short block, including all machine work cost me about $1200. All parts provided by me. As well, I did final assembly and remove and install. All said and done, easily spent 3k.
Where in northern AZ are you? I'm in Prescott.
2nd Tony comments. I did not have the area or tools to reassemble the engine component so I had the 390 engine rebuilt and assembled for around $2800, expensive and may have been able to cut cost? I visited, spoke with customers, and also read reviews by customers who had experience with the shop. In my area I found many shops, who claim to rebuild engines, do not have the equipment to professionally rebuild an engine who purchased rebuild kits and performed basis preparation on the blocks and heads then reassemble, and others who purchased and installed crated engines?
I would also suggest posting question in the Regional Chapter Forum; believe it would be the Southwestern Region, specifically Arizona?
