I've been through a couple Threads with no luck on this topic. I pull the Headlight switch 1/2 way out the running lights come on, without headlights, I pull the switch all the way out I get headlights without running lights. (Basically the opposite.)
(Its a 1988 F-350 with the 7.3 IDI & ZF5)
All the Fuses are good, The headlight switch and connector didn't look burnt, it looked almost brand new, The dimmer switch has no power going to or from it when the truck is on, when the truck is off it has power. It's weird.
Any help would be appreciated on this. I figure its a short somewhere..
Iam sure it is your Head Light Switch. The contacts inside it are probably worn or burnt.
If it the original switch from the factory, it`s 32 yrs old. Been pulled and cranked on a bunch of times.
I changed my HL Switch about 4 years ago. It was difficult to twist for the Dome Light and had a drag
to it pulling it out all the way for the Head Lights.
As I remember, not a lot of room for your hands to access it.
I just went out to check my 86 to see what you were talking about.
First click, Tail lights, fender side lights, and Turn signal lights come on.
Second click, then head Lights with the above mentioned lights come on.
Glad I checked mine. Had to hit left turn Signal and right fender side light to come on.
Looks like I need to pull these apart and clean up the sockets.
OH Yeah, I did my Dimmer Switch on the floor about the same time.
Think the low beam side of the switch went out and only had Highs.
Amazing how long that switch lasts, being in a dirty area and wet in
the winter.
This all started the other day, I had wired new door speakers, and I didn't notice until after it happened that my Radio's accessory wire was connected to the Orange and black wire (which connects to the headlight switch) could that have messed it up?
that ORG/Blk wire is just LCD Power for the Radio, so I wouldn't think so besides that is not part of the AR section which is where the failure is in the switch.
Ok... IF all the running lights come on when the Switch is in the Park Position and when you pull it to the head light position and the head lights come on and the Running lights go out the Common Place is the A/R section of the switch.
check to be sure A and R has continuity when in both positions. Or check that Voltage is present on A and R in both positions.
Fuse #4 feeds A.
from fuse #4 is Tan/Wht wire to "A" on the switch.... when the switch is set to 'Park' then 'R' should go HOT and it should stay HOT when the switch is pulled to 'Headlamps'..
