Negotiating mid order

I had placed an order about a month ago and got invoice (which I thought was good at the time)

While waiting on the truck, I've continued to shop around and found a place that will go below invoice. Has anyone had luck renegotiating the price after their truck has been ordered? I didn't put a deposit down, so I'm not losing anything if I end up walking away and just ordering through a different dealer. (Other than time and possibly having to wait for 2021)

If you didn't put a deposit down, you are under zero obligation - "you haven't even begun to negotiate"

Make sure both dealers are quoting you out the door prices. The dealer offering a less than invoice price may charge more in dealer fees.

I always put down a deposit and will verify every fee the dealer will charge when I pick up the truck. Deposits help keep everyone honest.

Even if you put a deposit down, you can still walk and get the deposit back.

I’m on the other side of the issue. Nothing against anybody, but you made a good faith deal with the dealer, if you were happy with the deal you got and the treatment you received why try and chop them now? How would you feel if the dealer called you and said due to supply issues they’re going to have to raise the price because they found someone who would pay more? Everyone on here would be screaming and telling you that you’re being screwed. I went through the same thing when ordering a boat, 3 weeks after I ordered it I found the perfect boat. Even though they hadn’t even started it yet when I canceled the order I told them to keep the $1000 deposit. Did it feel like crap losing the deposit, yes, but in the grand scheme of everything, they might have lost a client that didn’t want to wait because I was taking the slot. They had treated me well, and I had given them my word. 2 years later I’m still loving my boat and the deposit is forgotten. I’m sure I’ll be chastised for this, and this is not a shot at you, but if you made a deal you made a deal.

I totally agree. You made a good faith deal. Your word is your bond, unless of course like most replies here...it isn’t.

I thought it was common knowledge not to shop around after you make a big purchase...

...you will always find a better deal afterwards

I agree 100%. The salesman spent his time with you, you both struck an agreement and he's going forward with it. It's alot of work to get there, once I made a deal I would never go through it again to see if I could get it cheaper. Do all that crap before you waste someones time. I'm old school thou, I've developed relationships with the people I use, parts guy, gas guy, oil burner guy, dealer, it's loyalty, it goes both ways.

I do have to say your a bigger man than me for eating a grand.

I guess I just take things less personal than you guys. My view is until the truck is at the dealership and I'm sitting down to sign the paperwork, the negotiating isn't done.

Why should I try and make friends with my salesman? You know the dealership could care less about you, its all about the $$$.

All that being said, I will probably stick with my current order. I just want my damn truck

I wouldn't call it "taking it more personally" for me it's integrity. What you see and hear is what you get. Unless there's reasonable cause not to.

You have a question mark after "Why should I try and make friends with my salesman" you don't have to. Why would you want to try and make friends with him?

You can't tell some one else what they know. A merchant usually does care about their customers. If they didn't they might not sell anything. Of course it's about a sale. We don't go there find a friend, and he's not their to make one. The last 30 or so years I have always had great experiences buying for the family or me (same dealer), and I am one of the most judgemental, salesman mistrusting people out there, used car dealers are sometimes rough. I ask for invoice, I'm happy with $2-3 hundred under, of course they're still making money, I usually am very frank in talking and say their incentives and bonuses from the manufacturer are none of my business. I find them to be what I believe truthful and upfront, and I feel comfortable every time.

Nothing wrong with asking if they will match it. Put the ball in their court.

In my own business I would check to see if I could match and if I couldn’t I would explain and tell you I still wanted your business.

Interesting discussion..... I purchased my Super Duty on a handshake. Yes I could have bought it for a little less elsewhere. I shopped around, got an idea of what I should pay, went to my local dealer with an order sheet (sourced online), we agreed on a price, shook hands, and the deal was done! My daddy would roll over in his grave if I went back on an agreement, made in good faith. What I take personally, is that I can be counted on when I give my word. Yeah, whether it's to a friend, family member, or car dealer.

I agree with this. Some people have an incredibly negative reaction to even the mere concept of a deposit. But, for me, it sets the tone of the deal -- I'm serious and they're serious. It also helps establish the deal. When I write the deposit check, the deal is over. There isn't anymore back and forth. We did that, came to the deal, and I gave my deposit. Done. 2 months later, I just pick up the vehicle.

I don't understand the concept of buying something and then continuing to shop for that something. I tend to do my diligence up front. X-Plan is the starting point. Anyone can get X-Plan for $25 and it's basically invoice pricing with a $100 cap on the bogus fees a dealership charges. It's a pretty good deal that requires zero negotiation. Then, if you want to go deeper and see if you can get a few more $1,000 off that (below invoice), then it's pretty easy to make a few calls.

Cheers.

The latest dealer you speak with will always Promise a better price. Talk is cheap , when put to the test the secondary dealer will fail to deliver.
