99 V-10. I've put about 8k miles on this truck in the 14 months that I've had it. I just had the rear end, and trans service done and I just changed the oil and filter. I'm thinking of changing the coolant, but, damn that thing takes alot of coolant! $$$ So, how do I know if it needs to be changed? And I have the orange coolant. What is the equivalent without having to go to the Ford dealer? I'm not a cheapskate......but, I also just yesterday, spent $$$ on new front brakes and rotors. And I'm gonna check the rear brakes today.

Well orange coolant wasn't used or approved by Ford until 2011. Your truck would have had green coolant but can be serviced with Gold aka Zerex G05 with a full proper flush of existing and fill.
I believe Valvoline / Zerex claims their “Original Green” coolant meets the Ford spec for your truck’s model year.

Same here. I changed oil and filter not long after I got it. Recently I've done 3 trips to Idaho (1100 miles round trip ) and had the trans and diff service done ahead of those trips.
Here is the coolant that I drained. Definitely orange. I have a jug of traditional green that says pre 2002 Fords.

My 99 owner manual says this. I think I should stick with orange?
My owner manual in RE to coolant says to take it to a mechanic to change the coolant so it doesn't say where the coolant goes in. There's no radiator cap. So where do you put it in?
Is this the right stuff?
My rear brakes are in great shape so I'm gonna go ahead and spend the coin and change the coolant. I got some more Idaho trips coming up, so......

No that is not correct, that is orange DexCool. You need Zerex G05 or Motorcraft Premium Gold coolant.

Hmm. How come my owners manual only mentions green and orange? If I flush the system can I use green. Just cuz I already have a jug of it and a gallon of distilled water.

No it clearly states do not use orange coolant in any vehicle equipped with green. Thats a generic note, Ford never used Dexcool in trucks until 2011. In 1999 some cars were shipped with DexCool.

Because you are looking at a 21 year old manual that has been revised and superceded multiple times by now. Yes you can go back to green if you want to change it every few years. Staying with the Gold will get you easy 7+ years before changing.
I couldn't open the file. My phone doesn't have the space.
****, I'm f*&%$ng confused. I bought dex-cool. The manual says or a dex-cool equivalent. I don't know what f*&%^ng color it is. The cap is orange.
How are you confused? The manual has a generic note about dexcool because in 1999 Ford did use dexcool in a few select Mercury's. The manual does not tell you to use dexcool. What you have in the system is Gold because it was converted from green which was common and a procedure Ford had implemented.
Ford Gold also sold as Zerex G-05 DexCool \"Orange" on left Ford Gold Zerex G-05 Right
