battery trouble
bronco II
i had a guy replace the battery in my BII it is an 86 and he hooked the battery posts up backwords for a quick second then pulled it off right away
now my battery keeps going dead what could be wrong with this
some dip put the positive cable from the solonoid to the battery a black on
or put a test light between disconnected negative terminal and battery post. If it lights, you have a draw. Also put a multi meter on your battery while the engine is running. You should see a reading near the 15 volt area on the 25 volt scale. But, if you ask me I think your alternator is toast. They have diodes which are one way check valves. Hooking the battery up backwards has put voltage through the diodes in the wrong direction burning them out.
I think (I'm no expert) you should have around 12.8 volts with the engine off and around 14.8 or so with it running. If everythings working correctly, that should be very consistent.
Like Ken and MJB said, sounds like it's time to get the alternator tested. And get the battery cables corrected for color, or it's just going to happen again.
It used to be that a charge rate before internal regulators was 13.8 volts. The internal regulators are 14.5 volts. When ever you have a reading of 12 volts you are measuring the battery only. What I like to do is hook the volt meter up then start the engine. If no charging is happening the volt meter needle won't move off the present battery voltage reading. If the charging system is working you would see the volt meter needle jump up the the 14.5 volt area or near 15 volts. A for sure test would be to disconnect the negative battery cable while the engine is running. If the engine quits your charging system is not working. If the engine keeps running the charging system is good. This method will produce some engine surging as the computer has lost it's mind.
