Another Cold Start Problem Thread

Hi All,

I am having some trouble with cold starts on my 1986 F250 6.9. The IP and injectors were recently rebuilt. I just put in a replacement starter several months ago and the batteries are new and massively over any requirements for the truck. The truck has about 154K miles and has been well maintained. I have driven it quite a bit lately including roadtrips and it is overall in good condition.

The truck will start just fine warm. It also seems to slightly start better when I am driving it daily. On one occasion, it did start cold and run for a few seconds and then shut off by itself. I am suspecting air intrusion somewhere.

After doing some research, it appears the first items would be to get the supply line and one injector return line switched over to a clear plastic line temporarily so I can start looking for air bubbles. I have no idea how old the injector return lines are. If I remove one of them, will I end up breaking it? Can I buy replacement fuel hose for the return lines (either temp or long-term) at an auto parts store?

I have found fuel filter housing and bowl for sale new and I have found reseal kits for other Ford trucks. Is it possible to reseal mine or should I just buy a new one? I can't seem to find a reseal kit for this truck. Normally, I like to do diagnostics/troubleshooting but considering some things on this truck could be 35 years old, I would rather not take a chance finding myself stranded somewhere.

I ordered a replacement fuel filter (no idea how many miles are on the old one). Is there anything else I should look to do proactively in addition to searching for an air leak?

Thanks,

h.ubk

Here's an injector return line kit:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002M1L67G/ref=au_as_r?_encoding=UTF8&Make=Ford%7C54&Model=F-250%7C667&Year=1986%7C1986&ie=UTF8&vehicleId=1&vehicleType=automotive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002M1L67G/ref=au_as_r?_encoding=UTF8&Make=Ford%7C54&Model=F-250%7C667&Year=1986%7C1986&ie=UTF8&vehicleId=1&vehicleType=automotive

You should be able to get it at your local parts store too.

When you use clear tubing to search for air intrusion you can put it between:

1) The fuel tank and FSV
2) The FSV and water separator
3) The water separator and fuel pump
4) The fuel pump and fuel filter
5) The fuel filter and IP

The last 3 are the most likely sources of air intrusion. If you have an OE FSV that still works it's probably best to leave it alone.

Thanks, I just bought an injector return line kit.

Anyone know if you can buy a reseal kit for the fuel filter assembly?

Yep, that's it. I'm beginning to think a new assembly would be a good idea. I wanted to replace all of the rubber items on it because they are old.

OK got ya... the filter Gasket and the large "O" ring comes with new filter.. the other "O" rings are pretty generic and you can find them local

check out O ring kits at Harbor Fright ... I don't know of anyone that has a "KIT" per say.

what a lot of folks do is just use a single Piece Filter/separator like a Wix 33805then you only need to worry about the "O" Ring for the heater PN E8TZ-9K342-A or match it up.

I've had pretty decent luck with their kit, except for the return lines. There #111 oring has never sealed for me. I always have to order a bag of them on eBay or I'm sol.

But for matching up to oddball stuff it's a pretty handy kit for what it is.

I may do that. I actually already have the HF kit.

I am used to German cars where everything has some special material or thickness or special nonsense. It is nice to just go to the hardware store to buy hardware :-)

h.ubk, strange you have the later style fuel filter with the fuel heater and other
O Ring BS.
My 86 uses the Wix 33811 and is just a screw on filter. My 85 is the same.
Wonder if yours was changed at some time?

That is why I had to ask the Question.. as I see the new style quite a bit on the Older IDI's.

Often it seems folks changed them when they got rid of the Water Separator on the firewall as the 33811 is not a water separator/filter but the WIX 33805 that I posted is and the WIF sensor fits that filter as well and new "O" ting for the WIF Sensor comes with the new filter.

I know the 33811 does not have the water separator or drain on the bottom.
The newer style seems to have it`s share of problems with leaks etc... from
some of the threads I have read.

I do how ever have the Racor 500FG in place of the original factory separator
filter.

If it's been converted to the late style filter when you replace it, it comes with the top and bottom rubber O-rings. However in all the decades I've owned my pickup I've never had the big top or bottom seals leak. The plug-in at the filter heater---yes.
