I bought an F-150 about 2 years ago, and it had and still has the Lariat emblem on both doors. When I bought it, I added the standard $1000-1200 extra for the package, as the bank asked me if it had the Lariat package.
About 6 months ago, someone told me they had never seen an F-150 with the Lariat package without leather seats. I didn't think much about it, as I knew mine did not have leather seats.
About 2 months ago I started looking as to whether my truck had the factory installed keyless entry. I e-mail Ford.com and they answer that according to the VIN, I do not have the Lariat package.
Is anyone aware of folks out there that are slapping on Lariat emblems, and adding extra $'s to the selling price, when in fact the truck is not a Lariat?
How is the vin number broken down on these 97-up to see what is what? I know that the X?? means body style, is it different for a Lariat and an XLT? I also know that L=5.4 W=4.6 and 2=4.2v6.

I think that all Lariat's do have leather. The vehicle certification label (under "TR") would show "E" for leather 40/60, or "H" for leather captains chairs.
The other indication of a Lariat is under "TP/PS" (tape/paint stripe), where "C", "D", "E", and "F" indicate the possible Lariat stripes.
I don't think the VIN indicates directly whether a given truck is an XL, XLT, or Lariat. The factory can tell from the serial number part.
I'll see what happens when I go talk with the owner of the car dealership where I bought the truck.
Seems to me they were misrepresenting the vehicle they sold to me. Who knows, they could have slapped the decal on themselves.
It could be a national problem, where else can you slap on a $2.50 decal and add $1000-$1200 to the package, as long as the buyer is unaware of what comes with the Lariat package, which obviously many do not (including me, till now).
