I've got a 77 351M in my 74 F100. The distributor I think is out of the original 360, it's a breaker type dist. The plug gap is .044 for the 351M. Is this to big for the breaker type dist? Should I decrease it or leave it alone?

Mark, it depends on which coil you have on it. If it's the points type coil, the plug gap should be .035". If you're using the DuraSpark coil with the clip-on terminals, the plug gap should be .044". It's the energy output of the coil that determines the sparkplug gap.
Yep, .044" is fine with the Accel coil. It would probably take gaps up to about .050" without misfires. (Some people even go up to .055" with a performance coil.)
A Pertronix Breakerless kit would be an easy upgrade for that distributor. You'd never have to change and set points again.....
