I'm using a 1984 f150 chassis for my 1954 ******. I do not want computerized crap. How easy is it to eliminate everything? I know I need a different intake and dist. Would an intake and dist. off of a big block 400 work on a small block 351? Or completely different? Reason I ask is I have multiple 400's laying around.
Computerized crap on an '84? That's funny.. it will have an electronic ignition system but that's about it. But if you want to go all stone age on it then simply swap the distributor and ignition parts but they have to be for a 351w others won't fit.
Actually, an '84 could have a computer and a feedback carb. Those started in at least '82 as I had two of them - both W's. The 300 six also had feedback in that era. But, IIRC, the wiring harness was completely separate so is easily taken out. It certainly was on my 82's, which even had separate temp sensors for the computer vs the gauge on the dash. And, if it has a computer and you remove it then you must replace the distributor with a DS-II unit. But, you don't need a different intake manifold to eliminate the computer as you can block off the EGR port if you want.
But about the only thing from a 400, or an M for that matter, that'll fit a W is the valve cover bolts, and then you only need 3/4 of them. Two totally different engine families. And the 400 is easily built into a torque monster as it has the longest stroke of any Ford V8 - even longer than that of the 460. But, it has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the Windsor line so your tranny won't fit. And, it takes different perches on the frame so it won't even bolt in.
So, if you have several 400's, where are you located? There may be some FTE'ers looking for them. Like me.

Being a resident of the frozen north, you're probably unaware of CA emission requirements.
First computers installed in 1979 LTD/Grand Marquis 351W sold new in CA
1981/83 E/F100/250 & Bronco 302/351W sold new in CA also have computers, there are 2 different types.
There are 14 different computer ID numbers listed for 1984, but to find out what engines, states (and possibly Canada) they were used on, I'd have to look thru dozens of calibration code parts lists.
These specific 1981/83's sold new in CA can be looked up under the computers basic part number: 12A650.
Cannot do this for other 1981/83's sold new in other states (possibly Canada). Cannot do this for any 1984 and later...must be looked up in the calibration code parts lists.
Ditto for most other 1980/89 emission related parts. There are 713 different calibration code parts lists in the 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, I kid you not.
I am located in sweet home oregon. And I didn't think any 400 stuff would fit and yes I hate computers. Wheeler, need to be able to repair in the middle of nowhere. Whats with ****** being a censored word? It's a vehicle make
My 84 F150 is a 351W/c6/9". 2150 Motorcraft carb originally, now Edelbrock 1406 and a Performer manifold.
Many 351W of this vintage were Motorcraft 7200 variable venturi carbs. Not a lot of kind things said about this setup. I think it was electronically controlled. Carb is easily changed to a 2150, but I would not bother. Go EFI!
The 351M/400/429/460 distributor will swap with the 351W distributor if you change the gear. I think all the 335/385 engines were electronic ignition, possibly an exception for the early 429? Still, going backwards to points is not a good idea.
I've never had any problem typing ****** here on FTE.
Did'ja know that the Jeep has been owned by more automakers than any other vehicle?
American Bantam - ******-Overland - ****** Motor Co. - Kaiser-Jeep - American Motors (AMC) - Chrysler Corp. - Daimler/Chrysler - Cerberus Capital Management - Fiat-Chrysler.
1953: Henry J. Kaiser (owner of Kaiser-Frazer) purchased ******-Overland, changed the company name to ****** Motor Co. Name changed to Kaiser-Jeep in 1963, Kaiser-Jeep sold to AMC in 1970.
I will jokingly type J**p, Ch*vy, D*dge, etc, given that this is a Ford site. Then again, I'll also type F*rd when I'm on the J**p Cherokee forum. That's all in fun. But I've never had any brand names censored on me.
Just buy a distributor, coil and condenser for a 7.0 points engine.
As mentioned the Lima and Cleveland engines share dizzy's and starters.
I would never want to deal with points again, and just carry a spare ignition module under the seat.
Connect two plugs, and done!
WAY easier than filing points, setting gaps and dwell every 10,000 miles....
My ***** is just fine.
There are a lot of stupid things that hit the 'naughty' filter here, but not that.
Huh that's weird cuz everyone any of you typed it it got censored on my phone. But I will be swapping gears on dist. Then I should be good to go after my new intake? Nothing else?
