Hi,
We have a 2001 F-53 chassis with a 6.8L, for a 2002 motorhome. We have seemed too developed an intermittent starting issue. When the key is turned to start, everything comes on the dash, lights, etc, but the engine does not crank over. I do not even hear a click. The battery is relatively new with a great charge, clean posts, cables are fine, starter relay and starter are new. If it would do this again, I could check voltage at the relay from the ignition switch, but, as I mentioned, it is very intermittent and the intervals are spaced far apart. Would I be correct in guessing that the ignition switch could be failing?
Thank you for your input and time,
Daniel
What finally gets it to start? Just waiting, or by trying the key a few times?
The first time this happened, we were parked in a poor spot to leave the coach parked. I cycled the key numerous times and nothing. Then replaced the start relay, nothing, then the starter, which worked for several days. Yesterday, it happened again, cycling the key numerous times, it finally started and has been fine since.
When you say relay, do you mean the big one on the passenger fenderwell, that some would call a "solenoid"? Certain years of trucks had them, and some did not. My 2001 did.
I think there is a relay somewhere before that solenoid which also may be faulty.
When I mention the starter relay, that is in the passenger wheel well area. The solenoid is part of the starter unit itself. I hope I am correct with the naming of these. Bother the relay and starter, with the solenoid were replaced.
Thanks Krewat. With this schematic I felt confident on the switch so I replaced it last night and thus far no issues.. The coach was acting up before the replacement so it appears as if this did fix it.
Thanks again to all for your input.
Daniel.
