I've been upgrading the '62 one step at a time and am ready to get the fuel tank out of the cab. This is more to gain a little storage room than for safety. Would prefer to mount it under the bed but can't seem to find a kit that doesn't require moving a crossmember. The other alternative would be a fuel cell in the front of the bed. Also going to remove the mechanical fuel pump and add an electric unit at the same time.Any suggestions? The truck is just a nice daily driver with a hotrod theme so originality isn't an issue.
Do you have any metal fab'ing skills? If not a welding shop could surely make a custom tank. I drive a '65 F-100, know what you mean about a pleasant dd.
Suggest open the search menu and scroll down to advance; enter topic; i.e., relocating gas tank, or something similar then select the 61-66 forum and there are several threads on the subject:
Quick browse and came across couple may find helpful: There is an interesting 'how to' article by FTE member on installing the fuel filler in the Styleside taillight.
Yeah its not a lot of space. just enough for my small tool kit, the scissor jack, a couple of ammo box's, just stuff that would have had to go out back in the bed for someone to ******.........so for me, it was worth the trouble!!
One person mounted the rear tank with the filler coming up into the space behind the rear taillight. H e me made the taillight assembly into a trap door. t was really slick

This is an example of why I prefer member's post their project thru any other alternative than an online photo web-site, if one cancels their subscription the photos and project description of their progress is lost. I cancelled my online photo storage and now use a digital camera card and able to control photos.
...My install is linked above by Dave. I moved the crossmember back and bolted it in. Several things were accomplished. I gained a 22 gallon tank. I gained a tank that was fuel injection ready. I got an in-tank electric fuel pump. I gained enough space in the cab for a 40/20/40 seat arrangement from a 2010 F-150.

How? I tried and failed, there's simply not enough depth in the cab. Seats out of a '07 CCF150. Mocked it up and unless your legs are less than 2" diameter, you ain't fitting. For sure the steering wheel is too big.
BTW, there is/was a taillight kit for Tri5 chevys that is electric. I think it was modified but I saw it.
