Do you folks ever just turn around and follow a truck in order to meet the driver/owner? I’ve done this twice, including today, and the guys seem friendly and willing to talk. Even offering a follow up visit for advice or parts for sale. Tonight, I was driving across town to girlfriends house for dinner and saw a 48-50 truck that I didn’t have knowledge of being in my town going the other way. Followed him until he and the wife stopped for dinner. Is this normal ?
Personally I find more than enough trucks to ogle without having to chase them down on the road. The way the world is today I would be leery about approaching a vehicle that I had been tailing...

Especially living in the United States, you're pretty safe doing it in Canada...
I once had a 65 Coronet 4 door and a guy followed me all the way to work, but I didn't notice him- he was in a late model driver. Anyway when I stopped to enter the entrance gate he got out and talked to me. He had 3 65 Coronets and wanted to meet another owner, Yes at the time I thought it was odd but we became friends and we even traded parts back and forth. He has since passed, but I considered him a friend and was privileged to meet him. So I have never followed another in a old Ford Truck but I might, especially if I was in my old Ford also.
Why not ? Does anyone mind answering questions about their truck when approached ? This is a very social sickness ( was going to say hobby ) and we really like to spread it . We live in a small community where you tend to know a good portion of people you see on the road and for the first trips in the spring my wife will ask who's that when someone waves , and a second later say oh ya we're in the coupe everyone waves .
Some years ago I saw a 54 F100 that was parked at a store front where I was also parked. When the guy came out of the store I asked him about his well-patina'd truck. He said I don't know anything about about it, it's a POS that I put gas in and drive back and forth to work. Of course this was in El Cajon, CA where the weather is not a factor in truck upkeep but it just goes to show that not everyone who drives an old truck cares as much about them as we do.
It doesn’t appear to catch anyone off guard here in small town WV. I know or know someone who knows nearly everyone in our town, county, area. I didn’t tail the guy for hours, just turned around caught up to him as he parked and asked about his truck. From this instance, We exchanged business cards and I was invited over to his house to look at the truck during a more convenient time. As I said, he and his wife were going to dinner. The guy has another truck, tow truck, in work and also has several old broncos. The broncos are what he is known for. Turns out he is a retired shop teacher and worked with my girlfriends dad for many years. Didn’t know this when I met him but I now have an additional connection to the guy. I’m sure he will have stories to share about Mr. Weaver when I stop over.
The first guy was in a Chevy and I have gotten to know him well. He is retired and works on others trucks of this vintage. He offered up parts for me to look through from various projects that he has completed.
If when I finish my dads truck and then ever finish mine......I would think that I would relish a chance meeting with a person who shows an interest in my truck. I can’t enjoy it enough by myself so I am more than willing to tell a story, show it off, assist a like minded individual, offer up one of those treasures you have a hard time locating. Isn’t that what we are all doing in this forum?
I've had a few people follow me around and stopped to talk once I stopped, even had a couple vacationing from Germany that stopped me and asked if I'd be interested in selling my pickup. My wife said hell no...lol
When I was leaving Doc's house in KY for the long trip home, I was on the highway to Hazzard when a guy pulls alongside and is honking and waving me over. I immediately thought I was dropping parts or gushing oil or something, so I pulled over. The guy comes walking up to my truck, standing in the traffic lane on a busy road, and says, "What year is your truck?". I just shook my head and took off, I was really pissed off.
The first time I drove the truck, went to Sam's Club, where, in the next door parking lot, they were getting ready for a car show. I got my stuff at Sam's, and these people began following me out to the parking lot. Nice folks, they wanted to know about the truck, everything about it, in particular how much I might take to sell it. I told them about it being built by Harold Parker, and him using it for many years at the Detroit raceway, for any necessary tows and pushes. Harold had a garage and a business restoring old machinery, which is why he had, for advertising, "Parker's Garage" painted on the doors, so nicely that I have never been able to bring myself to erase it. Long story short, it finally came out that the kindly folks' family name was Parker.. .
I've had guys come over to me at gas stations. I did have a guy follow me for a few blocks. We were beside each other at a stop light and he was in the turn lane. He went straight and followed me. I was only a few blocks from my house and when I turned on my street he kept going on. I almost waved him over so he could check my truck out.
A couple years ago, I went a car show at a very small festival. (It was kind of a bust in a very small town) There were just two of us with trucks and no cars. Se we got to talking and took each other drives in our trucks. As we were talking later, a gal asked how long we had known each other. She was shocked that we had just met and figured we knew each other for a long time.
I haven't followed anyone yet, but I have about broken my neck a couple of times looking.
