These are photos of an apparently plugged intake manifold passage and a partially plugged passage in the head. Thought I would just tap through with a screwdriver and hammer when I was ready. But, this stuff is solid. especially the completely blocked intake. What am I missing? Are these passages supposed to be blocked from the factory or is my job here more difficult than expected? Motor is a stock 74 360 2v, although I have reason to believe it was rebuild by a company called Automotive Engineering in the unknown past. I am replacing the intake gaskets to stop those crazy oil leaks we know so much about, esp at the back end of the manifold. Your input is appreciated. Thank you...Roger
Looks like someone liked Bars leak or the such to fix a leak. That's what it's supposed to do. Don't ever use that stuff. That passage only exists to promote rapid heating of the carb. Modern aftermarket manifolds do not do this and just block it off.
The heads are the same on both sides so the passage gets blocked when it not intended to be used by the intake or the block. otherwise you'd need a right and left head casting. that's solid iron don't worry about it.
The exhaust crossover isn't needed if you have a manual or electric choke. I always block them off no good comes from heating the air being inducted.
Thanks. Is there any problem just letting sleeping dogs lie. Should any attempt be made to clean this stuff off the heads? The concern here is some breaking/dropping off and damaging some other cooling system components. BTW it looks like there is a crack in the intake manifold right above the opening addressed. Do you see the same thing? Issue? I appreciate your feedback
Thanks. Please note my response to Christmas. Sounds like you believe this was done on purpose, possibly by the factory? What do you think about my concern for cleaning off the heads. Stuff is on both heads. Yea, what about the apparent crack I referenced to Christmas?
It's possible it's cracked it's hard to say from a picture. since you have the intake off I'd get it hot tanked just for looks if nothing else.
it never hurts to clean things up just try not to get a bunch of gunk into holes you can't get it out of.
if your exhaust crossover has been partially plugged intentionally leave it alone or better yet finish plugging it with a steel plate inside the intake gasket port. if you're not using the thermostatic choke anymore.
