HPOP ejected rear cover!

I have never seen this, but a little searching and apparently it’s not that uncommon? But, I did not see WHY it happens and I wanna know!!!

This engine ran great and was driven until truck was parted out. It was installed in another truck and fired right up and ran a few minutes. After shutting it off to look for leaks, etc, it was restarted. While cranking, there was a ‘pop’ and the rear plate and snap ring were in the engine valley.

My guess is that the snap ring wasn't seated correctly, or it was warped in its past life.

I would agree, but it was an unmolested virgin (does not look like a reman) and came out of a perfectly good running 180k mile truck. Seems weird it would poop the bed right after installing it in another truck. Truck cranked right up because the HPO system was never opened (same injectors, etc).

One of my so-called friends says it’s because I painted it....

Looking at the picture the snap ring shows paint right to the edges like it was hardly engaged at all......

I think your friend is right. it worked all those years but the weight of the paint on the cap pushed it too far

It sure looks like in that 3rd picture that the snap ring was embedded on the right side (bare metal, no paint) and not so much on the left side (most all surface has paint).

I saw the same thing. Paint ‘to the edge’ of snap ring. I don’t know how much groove there is for snap ring - but I’d expect more than what it looks like in pics.

Maybe i should start taping off the snap ring?????

Of course, paint is now a tool in the forensic investigation...

I was gonna bust you on the paint but see I’m late to the party for that joke.

I can’t see well on the photos but what the others are saying is correct. Look at the paint and see if it’s even distribution. Then flip it over and look at the wear marks. I can see part of one in the third photo but the oil is hiding the rest. This will tell you where the ring was seated in the groove. It should be fairly even all the way around. My guess is you’ll see one side taper off and prove partial engagement.

Maybe throw up a good photos of each side of the snapring. Clean the oil from it to prevent the sheen.

But yeah I’m still going with the paint. The paint shrunk while drying and pulled the snapring loose.

There was also aggressive pressure washing. Oh, the engine was upside down for a couple of months while I waited for a chance to reseal the oil pan too. Perhaps gravity was also part of the equation??

Maybe we could start a new FTE myth. Snap ring hot re-torque to mitigate failures like this?? ESPECIALLY if using ‘shrinking paint’....

Not sure if you’re joking about the gravity thing but no should not be a factor.

Now the aggressive (stated by SSJ means extreme lol) pressure washing may have dislodged it. Possibly the pressure washer pushed it in a bit while also hitting the snapring.

Let’s see some good photos.

You are probably correct about extreme...

But, I’ve done that (and paint) to LOTS of these engines with no adverse effects. I’ll be cleaning another greasy oil-leaker today using my SOP of ‘aggressive’ cleaning.

Thats all I got from the guy that installed the engine... He was swapping his old HPOP on yesterday. I’ll poke him later if I don’t hear from him and ask for more pics.

Granted, this was at the North GA Tech Day wrap up, but as you can see SSJ is fully committed to cleaning the engine bay.

As for the hot torque on the snap ring, I think a specialty tool would need to be developed, then called something obscure and only talked about and used, never an image posted. It would be elusive and useful...

I have nothing useful to add except to say that the circlip had better line up perfectly on that cover when it all goes back together to hide the unpainted bits.

SSJ, sorry I didn’t realize the parts were not in your possession.

Good to see your cognitive abilities were not affected during your fall yesterday.
