I have an 2002 F250 diesel cc with 51,000 miles. I was driving about 55 mph when the truck started to bog down like it had bad fuel. I was about to pull over and drain the water seperator when I noticed smoke from behind the truck. At this point there was nothing on the dash that indicated a problem with pressure or temp. As I pulled off the road the engine indicactor light came on but pressure and temp where still good (not sure if they are functioning properly). When I opened the hood all I could see was oil, it was everywhere. My intake manifold looked like a swimming pool, the oil completely cover everything in the engine compartment, the underside of the truck as well as the rear of the truck. Does anyone have any idea as to what may have gone wrong? The only thing I can add is I had an oil change that week and I did notice a 8 in. oil stain on my driveway after the fact--not sure if something was going wrong that went unnoticed or not. Any help would be appreciated. Also, could there be internal damage to the motor, I know when I broke down I check the oil level and it did not register at all, it was bone dry.
Did the oil filter fall off? Did an oil line rupture? (The only external line I can think of is the one to the turbo)
Beter have it towed to a diesel repair shop if you can't find the obvious problem. If the filter fell off or came loose you are probably OK because you slowed down and stopped while you still had pressure. They will run for a few seconds on residual oil without damage.
I usually see the high pressure oil lines or fittings fail and cause this problem. It's covered under your engine warranty and isn't that bad to repair. The engine will actually shut down before major damage can occur when the oil level gets too low so don't worry about the engine itself.
