I’m in southern CA and we have a 26,000 plus acre fire burning. News just said that they have traced it back to a “ Diesel powered vehicle emissions during the exhaust cleaning process”. I can only assume they are referring to a truck in regen!?!
It’s not just diesels that will cause grass fires.
One of my tech reps drove off side of road with a company Caravan and the catalytic converters caught the grass on fire under the van. The van burned to the ground.
I could see them fabricating this story in order to continue the push to ban diesels....
That's what I was thinking. Most media coverage is agenda driven to shape public opinion. It's hard to get straight facts even on spot news...Man Bites Dog kind of stuff.
It's easy to believe. As already stated, catalytic converters have been starting grass fires for a long time. I imagine the owner of the truck has come forward and explained what happened. It's easy for the investigators to determine where it started and there's probably a burned out truck there.

It may have been a tractor and not a truck. My father in law is a farmer in Iowa and his brand new tractor burned to the round last year.
I remember my first experience with a "regen" engine, an '08 6.4L. I parked during a regen, left idling, and the exhaust was in some cheat grass that was near mature. Went inside for a minute or two and came out and sounded like popcorn popping. The exhaust was popping the cheat grass seeds just like popcorn, could kind of smell it trying to burn. Also found later on you don't walk by the exhaust tip after/during regen with shorts on.
