Going home today. 5 hour trip. Solo truck, not towing.
OD light started flashing and ABS first thing this morning before breakfast. Was shifting hard.
after breakfast all seemed well. 2/5 hours down the road, ABS light comes on. OD OFF starts flashing, SPEEDO goes crazy. 0-90 MPH all the rest of the way home.
shutoff truck to feed the newborn baby at rest area. Same symptoms. No ABS light the last 1.5 hours home though.
The speedo has never put out any speed until 15+ MPH since we got the truck 2 years ago., I tried parts store ABS/VSS sensors as well as OEM ford sensors. As soon as I instal any or All of them the speedometer does not work at all. So I always end up back with the one from factory.
any ideas? I can’t simply swap sensors. As I’ve literally tried 4 different ones including OEM. the factory one has a round tip. All the aftermarket and ford ones that came from the dealer have a torx looking tip.....
im thinking trying a new harness at the axle first? Start simple hope for the best. Expect the worst.
Truck has 260k on it now, no idea on the history of the transmission
In this vintage truck the problem is almost always the PSOM (Programmable Speedo/Odo Module) located on the rear of the instrument cluster. It controls the speedo/odo, and it sends vehicle speed data to the PCM, where it is used to schedule the shifts. There are companies out there that rebuild these. I don't know any of them.

ok ya it very well could be! Maybe someone will post with a link to a reliable company!
I watched some YouTube videos. I think I might be able to handle it. parts are about $6
Better then paying 99-199$ For someone else to repair it
I had a buddy replace 1 obviously bad capacitor. It had shrunk on the PSOM. the bigger of the 2. Speedometer is working great
OD light still flashing and shifting hard. Should I just try unplugging the Batteries for a bit to reset codes and see if it cures it? No check engine light

Here’s the new capacitor. If you look at the shrink wrap around it you can see it reaches the top. If you look at the circuit board below the capacitor shrunk and there is a silver color exposed towards the top. I didn’t realize they could shrink as well as swell. My buddy said it was bad. He was right. Speedo back to normal. But OD light still flashing.
Disconnecting the batteries won't cure it. If the light is flashing the problem exists. What codes are stored?
no stored codes at all. Just decided to clear.
restarted truck. OD Flashing at idle in driveway.
I may try replacing the VSS harness.
As stated before or in a different thread, the aftermarket and new OEM VSS sensors from
parts store and ford will not pickup any signal. The only one that will work for me is the round metal factory sensor. Frustrating
There are stored codes. Your reader can't read them.
The OD light flashes when codes are stored. Since you cleared the codes and the light flashed again, it stored the codes again. Either you're going to need a better scan tool (Forscan works great!) or you need to start shotgunning parts until you get lucky.
ok. Thanks. I’ll try it out. If not I’ll try my buddies laptop
friend with the laptop has a f350 frame and axles. I robbed the VSS from it. Now I just gotta figure out how to convince him to give me the front axle too 🤘🏽😝
