I'm looking for an old school sound from My flathead 8 with dual exhaust. The exhaust is fine BUT very quiet and I would like that deep throaty sound a person would hear on a early 50's car that sounded great but didn't mean a lot of HP if you know what I mean. I remember the "cherry bomb" mufflers but that's not what I'm after. It was deep low loud grumble type sound. Thanks in advance to all
I'm a little too young to know what cars sounded like in the 50's. But, I know there's more to it than a muffler, although it plays a big role. Exhaust tube diameter, larger diameter tubing will yield a louder deeper exhaust note. How early the camshaft opens the exhaust valve. Opening the exhaust valve earlier in the power stroke will produce a louder exhaust. Cylinder pressure, and probably more.
I don't know if you're looking for the basic old school Turbo or Super Turbo style muffler. Those produced kind of a deep exhaust note. Then there are todays chambered mufflers. Depending on choice, they will also produce a deep exhaust note.
Smithy's, I've never heard, but they look like a Glass Pack style muffler, (not for me).
Thanks but those skinny piped Merc/ford flathead V8's had some great deep growl. I loved that sound. Just need to locate those muffler's. I can look into JC Whitney. I run 3 inch flowmasters on My 67 R/T with a 472 Hemi and the car sounds fantastic BUT that is not the sound for the Ford I want.
Smithys mufflers. eBay it and you’ll see them. I run the 22”
X2 , Any hotrodder worth his salt would have used Smithy's back in the day .
Probably the best mufflers you could use on a flathead or y block by far , a sound you will never beat .

you are correct, there isn’t anything that matches a smithy on a flat head or y blocks my truck sounds like a boat in the water at idle, and not too loud out on the road
It's next to impossible to get the lower frequency range with a phone or most camera microphones. If you want to catch the deep tones you'll need a quality external mic.

At least with flatheads, they really only sound throaty from 1200 - 2000 RPM and while under a load. Red's Headers with Smithy's on mine, 1-3/4" pipes all the way back. Here's clip, skip to 1:00 to hear the best sound:

I had dual 22" Smithy's on my OT Ford with a flathead. It was nice. A little quiet at idle but woke up when revved. Here is a clip of a set of Porter's that sounded very similar to mine, skip through to about the 2min mark.
