Ambient temperature indicator

Posted this in electrical section but don't know how many check that.
I noticed this on my last few F-150s. If I drive downhill about 10 miles from our cabin in the mountains, (narrow, slow dirt road), my ambient temperature indicator won't update until I get to the spot where I can get up to normal road speeds. Seems to work fine going uphill the same way. What the heck is this tied to? Speed, throttle, ?? Anybody from Ford on here who can tell me? Thanks

I have no idea, I just know it is almost useless, unless you read it first thing in the morning under carport.

My experience is that while I'm moving mine is pretty much always within a degree or two of the time/temperature signs on banks etc.

Same here.

But I cannot tell you if it is 'tied' to anything.

Man, I might have to have mine checked if / when I ever take to a dealer for warranty work. Mine is always low or high, I always think the chrome on my mirror might be playing with it, but seriously, mine is accurate first thing in the morning, then off the rest of the day.

I have not noticed that. It always seems to be within a couple of degrees to outside references, but I do have to admit that I don't really critique it.

Yes, always seems to work pretty well except in the case I cited.

Mine works, but not very fast at sampling temperature differences. When I leave for work in the morning at around 82 degree weather it will usually show that and by the time I get to work 15 or so miles later it may be in the 85-87 range depending on the day. I can drive around the site on a few short runs during the day and it will not go up from that 0830 85-87 temp it got on the way in. When I leave for the day at the temp is 95 and feels like 110, it still reads 85-87 for at least 1/3rd the way home. Have noticed since getting the truck 3.5 years ago.

On the other hand, my Turbo Regal will show the 110 degrees that it feels like sitting in the sun when I leave for home, but will come down to the 95-99 it is in a 1/4 mile or so.

I sure hope the temp sensors Ford uses for the A/F mixture are better at intake air temp reading. Glad I have an N/A and not a EB. Glad to know GM has it right on my turbo Buick .... sooner or later I will want a turbo truck and I really do not want a full sized 4 cylinder engine truck. Besides they are kinda ugly anyway!

Mine seems to work pretty well. It does, on rare occasion, lose it’s accuracy. For example, a few times on 95F degree days it temporarily showed 84F or 86F

The ambient air temp sensor is an input to the PCM. The PCM then sends raw temperature data to the FCIM which filters it and sends the result to the APIM and finally to the touchscreen. There is a reset procedure for the AAT sensor:

On the HVAC panel controls press the A/C and Recirc buttons simultaneously the release both
Within 2 seconds press the A/C button again.

This might help things.

Thanks, I'll try that! We're going to the cabin again this week so will be a good test.
