Experience. If I knew then what I knew now, I probably wouldn't have bought the specific Ex I have now. On the other hand, it has taught me a wealth of knowledge out of necessity.
I'd hang on to an Autel, Snap-on, or any high end scanner. Sure it's a bit of a financial investment, but you never know when that stuff will be handy. Shoot, I've used FORScan more on friends cars than my own.

i know we can tell a lot about the condition of the car by just inspecting the frame and under-carriage(using car jacks), checking the oils and engine sound while idle and driving, and maybe for safety, check the voltage output from alternator to battery.. use light to check rotor pads and wheels
any other variables I should check that I may have to use an obdII scanner? (passing smog etc). i know some scanner could check alternator/battery for you too.
