Would the Rear GAWR rating on the certification label clue us in?
I usually say that after all these years you need to pull the axle and count the splines yourself because you never know what some PO did.
Not sure I'd go by the end flanges either. That might hold true for certain year 9" rear ends, but the 28-spline axles in all the Early Broncos looked just like the 31-spline flange in the picture.
If you still have the tag off the rear it can be looked up.
With the code on the tag you can look up which parts list to use, that will give you the part number of the axles, then you can look up that part number and, using that number, look up the specs of the axle. That will tell you whether it's 28 or 31 spline.
looks like most of the researh ive already done. not a resal clear answer. this is a rear end im buyimg and its about a hour and a half away. the only pics i got are of the end of the axle( looks like a 31, has the two holes not th big slot) and a partial pic of tag but i havent been able to find any of the info on how to use the tag to determine axle splines.

ok so I found a table and with my code it says parts list number 88, how do I find this parts list? Thanks

I was looking the other day and trying to find the difference between an F100 and an F150.
They said that the F100 had a car rear axle which is a 28 spline axle and the diff cover bolts on in the back.
The F150 had a truck axle which has a 31 splice rear axle and has no diff cover.
SO.... maybe if it's a truck axle it should have 31 splines (?)

The rear with a differential cover is a Dana 44. These were used on some f100-150's in the mid-70's They were also geared very high ~ 2.75.
The parts list is found in the Ford Master Parts Catalog. I checked it and found it shows five different axles. To find which one I need the code off of your diff tag.
To save you the trouble, I checked the specs on all five axles, they're all 31 spline.
Only definitive way to know for sure is to pull a shaft. I pulled a 9" from a 78 Bronco in a salvage yard years ago that had the flanges that most said indicated 31 spline. Being 4x4 also should have been 31 spline. It wasn't. Didn't discover that till later. Maybe it had been swapped into that truck - no idea. But the 28 spline flanges had the holes just like 31's do.
