i have a 11 f250 with the 6.7
i have been considering purchasing a 3 car trailer to expand my business. However from my understanding once u transport cars for money and your over 10k lbs you need a USDOT number. I understand you need an LLC to get a USDOT number. So first question, can u use my existing LLC? Its set up for automotive repair and services. I personally would consider this to be in the same area of work however the feds may not agree. No big deal ill just open another LLC if need be. Just would like to know if i need to open another one
2nd question is the truck it owned by me personally. Under my current LLC work, I use the truck and wright off miles from my personal vehicle. I have been told the truck in order to receive a USDOT number needs to be owned by the business. However researching this i have not found anything that says the truck needs to be owned by the business.
So is this true? Dose the truck need to be registered to the business to get a USDOT number? It cant be owned personally and used for the business? If not can i personally lease the truck to the business to get around that?
Any information would be appreciated. Just trying to get my ducks in a row before i buy the trailer.
I don't have any answers for your DOT questions. But, I think that an F-250 towing a 3 car trailer (loaded) would provide some entertainment for a DOT inspector, who you would be subject to as a commercial carrier. Real easy to get over axle ratings with a heavily loaded PSD F-250.

Yes careful loading would be required. For the most part its small cars. I have a contract with a used car dealer who sells a lot of small to mid sized cars. Transporing from the auction to there shop is somthing id like to capitalize on including some specialty cars that sell cross country.
Anyhow ill sort numbers of axel wights as well here as we go. Need to see if its even a financially viable business opportunity and for that it needs to be dot legit
