Can some of you fill me in on DOT numbers I'm Canadian own a small company and will be going to Kansas to pick up 3 trailers one a 34 ft. 5th wheel car hauler, will put a 10 ft long x 5 ft wide motorcycle trailer inside that one and tow a 12ft x7 ft cargo behind. These trailers are for resale by my company and will be pulled by my F350 whch belongs to my company. Have went to the DOT website and nothing is clear there emailed them received a answered just telling me how to get a number on line not that I need one or why I would need one. If I do need this what is the cost and the rules or issues I must to conform to?
In canada because I am the owner and not a comerrcial trucker hualing other peoples goods as long as the truck or trailers are not over 10,000 lbs each I dont require special drivers or truck licencing.
hdway,
I don't think weight is your problem. I think it is going to be length and towing two trailers at once. Your trailers add up to 46' and with your truck, not knowing what kind of cab you have. Mine is a crew that is 21' feet long, that is 67" in length. I'm sure though the two trailers will be the real problem.
Some States allow doubles some including my home area of Canada allows double as long as the first is a 5th wheel Overall length in Kansas seems to be 59.5 ft. but I will be out of there in the first hour on secondary highway. My overall will be 66 ft give or take and most States allow 70 to 80 ft Canada is 75 take a look at all the 18 wheelers that are now 30 wheelers or more pulling doubles or triples. The manufacture tells me they pull tripple bumper pulls out of his location all the time he just sugested maybe I need a DOT number.
You are gonna have to check each state you drive through on whether you can pull doubles with a pickup. Some states allow it, some don't. Not sure on the border issue...... Is your truck registered in your company's name or your name? Company name on the sides? If you are registered private and no company name and you can get through all the states you plan on driving through with doubles, just yank 'em north.
If you you want to be completely legal, then you would need a DOT number because you have a company truck doing company business which makes you comercial anyway you slice it. And since your truck is registered in Canada for only your province??? That would equal a Single State Registration so you would need to buy permits for each state you plan on traveling through. You can find a company online (google trucking permits) that could set you up with all the necessary permits.
It might be cheaper if you find a company that can haul them up for you. Check your local cargo trailer dealer and find out who they use to haul the trailers up. They might be able to fit the two, with the one inside on one trailer.
Long winded I know, but those are my thoughts.
Blow the scales, it is easier to apologize than ask permission!
Thanks for info Jokenring the boarder is no problem it was just the DOT number thing trying to find out if I became a watched person or what if I applied for it.This number thing turned into more of a trailer pulling item and I guess it should of been it the trailer form but thanks for the input.
