Good Day Everyone, I have a 99 F250 S.D. with a 6.8 in it. The engine is getting way up in miles now, app 700K, and I want to find a motor I can strip down and build to replace the one in it now. I have been told that you have to match the 8th digit in your VIN, mine is "S" to get an acceptable donor for replacement but I am curious as I am only planning on using the long block as the donor. So does it matter what year the donor is ??? I have been looking at specs and it seems the newer the motor is the more H.P. and torque they have and I was wondering if I can use a newer motor in my truck ?? Any help or advice on this would be appreciated as I am just starting to look into this engine swap !! Thanks
The higher horsepower numbers in the newer engines is due to better flowing g heads and 3 valves.
there are a few threads about swaping in a newer motor in place of a old one. There are several parts from the newer truck that are needed.
While Crusty's response is correct about later 6.8s being 3V and better outputs there is another step between the two. Your original '99 is a non-PI motor, starting in '00 the V-10 got the PI (performance improved) heads and intake and a nice little HP/TQ increase from them. I would explore looking to the PI version if repowering a '99, I think that the PCM will work but may need a fresh tune to match the intake and heads upgrade.
700K is very respectable, congrats.
Hmmmm !! Ok so the 2000 PI motor would be what I am looking into. The next question being the donor I am looking at to buy says he has the ECU with it. WE3ZS in your reply you said "I think that the PCM will work but may need a fresh tune to match the intake and heads upgrade." I am not a electronics person, more the mechanicals of the vehicle so my question is the ECU he has the same as the PCM you mentioned ??? And if so are they interchangeable ???

Yes, the ECU and PCM are the same thing, different manufacturers call them by various names. I'm not experienced in swapping these electronics around, just what I've read and learned here over time. But with a similar pair of vehicles there is a very good chance of comparability between the two.
From year to year on most Ford vehicles the PCM wiring schematic will vary meaning the vehicle's wiring harnesses will have been changed to match. If you swap a PCM from the same year and vehicle in theory you'll have no issues. If going with a completely different year and engine/transmission type or size you won't have proper operation.
Ideally you'd obtain the engine along with all wiring harnesses from the PCM to the engine. The transmission will have to be the same otherwise you'll have problems there too.
Others will know if the long blocks between the PI vs non-PI heads would allow a swap. Using the 3V engine in a 2V chassis with stock PCM won't work as there is additional valve timing component wiring and strategies of the 3V PCM not present in the 2V versions.
