Wheres can I find a scanner with real time reading
I have a 97 f150 with a 4.6l 2v I rebuilt. I was told a scanner with real time readings would be a good way to troubleshoot some problems I'm having with the motor. Wheres a good places to purchase a scanner that has real time readings?? Thanks
I use an elm327 adapter connected to a windows laptop running forscan. Forscan will show you everything that is going on in your truck and will even program PATS.

Yeah, that. It does require some hardware, software, and some learning curve.
If you just want to go to Walmart, amazon or an auto parts store to buy a dedicated scan tool, just look for one the explicitly states that it supports "Mode 6" data reading. That's what Ford uses for most of the live data.
Make sure you get the correct one for your phone. I've got an android currently and they make one for IOS. Alternatively, I've seen some of the Bluedriver OBD Scanners in action and will be upgrading to that if I decide against the forscan.
Both can be used with free apps or you can purchase the pro versions. My scanner did what I needed when I had to diagnose the O2 sensor on my Silverado and intake gasket on my F150 as well as provides realtime temp readings for the coolant, voltage, fuel trims, rpms (stick shift f150 and no tach), and other stuff besides.
Forgot to mention that mine will only read codes that trigger a CEL. If you are looking for one that will check ABS and Transmission codes than the bluedriver is the scan tool you want. Chrisfix on youtube has a lot of helpful videos on auto repairs and also recommends this tool as he has put a couple videos out specifically for this scan tool.
This is the one that I bought couple years ago before I got my F150. https://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products...s%2C340&sr=8-1

Sounds like what all I needed . I appreciate the link. Thanks alot.
I would check for codes first then look to make sure fuel trims are in spec. What are the symptoms you're experiencing with your truck?
I only had 7 codes come up. Over half of them was not something to do with the engine running properly. It cranks and starts fine. It has a roof idle. When I press on the gas a lil it hesitants a lot longer than need be. When it idles back now its the same thing.
No one here is psychic. if you want help diagnosing an issue, provide full and explicit details of the vehicle, the concern, and the accumulated observations and details. That avoids the game of "20 questions".
Its a 97 f150 4x4 with A 4.6l 2v. W block. I rebuilt it after I found a piston had chips knocked out of the top of it. I sent blick and heads to machine shop. Had the heads vacum tested and shaved. New valve seals. Found 2 cylinders bad. #2 had top corner of piston broke off and the other had a bent rod. I ordered a rebuild kit with 30 over pistons. It s probably took me almost a year to Put it all back togeher and back in the tuck. Only because I wanted it done rite. I put factory replacement tube headers on. So I didn't have to worry about the o2. I had already gutted the catalytic convertors. When. I firsts fired the engine up i notice one header was way hotter than the other so I shut it down and checked every thing from top to bottom. Checked timing like 100 times. Everything is good. Someone on here said I should get a scanner that reads real time data. So I did. I got a bluedriver scanner. It does mode6. Real time reading. All kinds of stuff. I hooked it in truck and fired it up and it keeps giving me a code on board diagnostic system readiness test not complete. It will idle but when the gas is mashed it takes it for ever to rev up. Then takes it forever to idle down.
