Swap a 370 for a 460?
Swap a 370 for a 460?
Got a 1981 Ford F-700 Dump truck with warped heads due to overheating/blown head gasket. Would cost a small fortune to have it rebuilt and am looking for a replacement , either another 370 or a 429. I was told a 429 will match right up with the 5-speed Spicer tranny and the motor mounts will all fit too.
Trouble is, these engines are really hard to find and when you do they want $$$thousands. There are SO MANY 460's out there, good runners for $500-$800.
I get so many different stories on whether the 460 will marry up to the tranny and some say the motor mounts will match, others say you need to do some serious tweaking to get mounts to marry up.
I posted here earlier and got a lot of opinions but the main thing is if the bell will fit with the Spicer tranny. I got a good welder for motor mount modifications so main question is, has anyone actually done a 370 to 460 swap and has hands on experience..??
i have heard quite a few negatives about the 460 being a gas hog etc but am sure it would put out the same HP as the 370 if not considerably more. Dump Truck has a 2 speed rear end which is typical and I just need to go to the quarry 10 miles away on roads that are all in a 35 mph limit .
Thanks.

You will have to dress the 460 up with the front cover and bell from the 370. Not sure about the flywheel as you will want to bring the clutch over as well.
370 flywheel to 460 is probably a no go.
The 429 you would want would be the truck engine. A car 429 will be the same issues as a 460.
It has been done. I will try to find the threads for you tomorrow.

OK, like I said, it's been done.

Thanks. those posts are what i saw last time i asked the question. Looks like I just need to find a local mechanic who has a lot of experience in engine swaps and go from there. Originally I wanted to put in an older 7.3 diesel but was told that would be way too much work to marry up to the tranny, motor mounts and clutch linkage. You can put any type of engine into anything if you have enough money to throw at it. in this case an old $3000 dump truck is just not worth it...time to part it out..
