Pull 7.3

So I need to pull my 7,3 out for a new oil pan and gasket among other things I want to do. My question is I just got a once used harbor freight 1 ton engine hoist for basically nothing. I’m a little worried it may not be enough to pull this massive motor though. Let me know has anyone successfully done this. Thanks

You be fine, just make sure the hydraulic jack is working and holding when weight is applied, sometimes they are low on oil and cause it to slowly drop. Just for info, dry engine weight is 920lbs.

Thank you for the response. I know they are heavy and awkward.

The lift should be fine.

Couple of thoughts:
If pulling in a garage, make sure you have high ceilings. You will probably have to raise the lift as high as possible to get the engine out

be prepared to either let the air out of the tires or remove them and lower the truck with a jack. The truck is tall and the motor is big. Even with the lift all the way up you may need a few inches to get it out.

Removing the radiator support and associated pieces will make it easier to get it out and back in and you reduce the risk of damaging the radiator. It can be done with them still on but it is tight

97-psd - yeah my garage is not tall at all. So I will be pulling it just in front of the garage and then have to wheel it inside to the engine stand. This is my first PSD rebuild and while it is out I plan on doing the following:
  • new Injector Cups and Injector O-rings
  • new glow plugs
  • Oil cooler reseal
  • Turbo reseal
  • new oil pan and gasket
  • new valve cover gaskets and wiring harness
I did plan on removing the radiator and most of the components on the front of the engine before lifting it. Ive never done it but it appears the main radiator support will unbolt and allow me to pull the engine out of the truck more forward then up. Is this the case. If you have any other suggestions of what I should do while the engine is out let me know. Thanks.

Also, it would be a bad idea to pull the engine and trans together. Pull the engine separate.

You might have to pull the turbo before you can get the thing out... and you'll definitely need to remove the oil filter.

I second the up pipes. Much easier to do on the stand.

Pulling the turbo and oil filter will give more room for sure, but depending on your situation you can pull it with them both still attached.

Are you planning to pull the trans too?

No I am not planning on pulling the trans. I am going to take the whole front of the truck off (radiator core support) so I don’t have to lift it as high and can pull it more out the front. Plus the radiator core support Has some rust I want to take care of. Is there a Single kit I can buy that has all the gaskets, orings, etc that I would need to Just re-do everything? I figure once I have the engine out I might as well do the head gaskets and everything else.
