First, my turn signal started not returning to off position. A few days later the brake lights, on the rear of truck, will not go off. They stay on all the time. I disconnected the battery to save charge while the truck is sitting.
Any ideas on how to proceed? I have had two or three turn signals, in steering column, replaced over the last few years.
Don't know if it's a manual or automatic trans, but hook up the battery. If the brake lights are on, go inside the truck and pull up on the brake pedal.
prop it up with something or have a friend watch the brake lights for you. If they go out with the pedal up as far as it will go you need to adjust the
Brake switch sensor mounted on the pedal. When the brake is resting in its normal position it should press the switch in to turn off the brake lights.
Manual transmission. Will probably wait until tonight to check with suggested method, should be able to see light on side of garage at night. Don't have any help.
I guess turn signal not returning and brake light issue are not related, just coincidence...don't know. The emergency flasher switch worked once or twice and now it doesn't work correctly. Worst problem is brake light, because I can't use truck without disconnecting battery when I get out of truck.
You could unplug the brake light switch, hook the battery back up and then go out back to see if the brake lights are on.
If not I would plug it back in and see if back on then you if it is the switch or not.
Don't need help doing it this way.

There are 2 types of switches.
1 is a plunger type and they make 2 different types. A normally open and a normally closed but both get adjusted the same way.
They screw in or out on the bracket to hit the brake pedal arm.
To replace this type you unplug the switch and unscrew it from the bracket.
The other as far as I know is not adjustable. It fits on the brake rod at the pedal held in place by the pin holding the brake rod to the pedal arm.
There is a little play in this assy. and when the pedal arm moves the play gets taken up in the pin & rod turning on the switch.
To remove this type you have to unplug the switch and pull the pin out and the switch can then be removed.
I want to say you have the later as I think that's what my 81 F100 had.

I just wedged the pedal up as far as it would go and the lights stay on. Guess that means I need a new switch?
I would unplug it just to make sure.
Remember the 4 ways have power to them all the time and if there is something up with the turn signal switch they could be on.
Because of the type of brake light switch I am sure you have you really don't want to be changing it as it will be bad enough just to unplug it.
Cant remember I think there is a fuse for the brake lights does it do anything else like maybe the turn signals / 4 ways?
Dave ----
If I unplug the switch and the lights go out...what does that tell me?
I would say the switch if bad but if you were to pull the switch out and the lights still on the switch could or could not be bad.
If un plugged and they stay on then I would look at the turn signal switch.
I kind of thought that was the type of switch you had, it can not be adjusted that I know of.
Dave ----
By "four ways" I guess you mean the emergency flashers? There is something going on with them...they stopped working at about the same time the brake light problem started. And the turn signal is acting up too. They work but don't always return to off and I hear clicking inside the steering column.
Well we need to track this all down to see what is going on.
Unplug the brake light switch and see what that does first and we can go from there.
Dave ----
Unplugged the switch and the lights went out.
Went to parts store and got new replacement. Fixed the problem. Total cost about nine dollars.
Turn signal issues seem to be separate issue. Still won't return to off sometimes. i can live with that for a while. I have replaced the turn signal two or three times over the years, not in a hurry to do it again. Will do it when it must be done.
Dave G. , thanks to you and everyone that tried to help. Best forum for getting a little help.
